On July 1, Shawn Poneleit of Venice rolled a perfect game in the Monday Men’s League at Treasure Lanes in Port Charlotte, but he was “bummed out” that he failed in an opportunity for an 800 series when he suffered a final-frame split.
This past Monday (July 15), Poneleit made up for that disappointment when he posted an 804 series on games of 279, 279 and 246, and that achievement is the headline accomplishment in this week’s usedview.com report on high scores from bowling centers in the Sarasota-Manatee-Charlotte County area.
“I was certainly a great feeling to get the 800 after missing it by one frame two weeks ago,” Poneleit said. “The shot they have at Treasure Lanes is tailor-made for my shot. I have more hold (area) on the outside, so I can play a nice and slow up-and-in shot, and the results have obviously been good.
“That, and I’ve been practicing hard on my spares, and I’ve been spot-on with my spare shots the last five weeks, which is a big reason why I’m on a hot streak.”
The 29-year-old righthander, who raised his current 21-game average to 236, added, “Two of my teammates are from Venice, and they say (Treasure Lanes) is a little tougher for them, but they throw big swing shots with a lot of revs, and I don’t, so I guess that plays in my favor. Actually, my first game was near-perfect, as a solid 8-pin in the eighth frame robbed me (of a 300 game).”
Poneleit had a pair of prior 800-plus series to his credit, both at AMF Venice Lanes: an 835 (on games of 279, 300 and 256) on Sept. 21, 2007, and an 804 (on games of 257, 247 and 300) on Jan. 20, 2010.
