Since the late 1950s, Lime Rock Park, has been recognized as one of America’s most challenging road racing venues. Noted for its relatively short run of just 1.5 miles, encompassing 7 quick corners with an elevation change of nearly 7 stories, almost every famous driver has raced the circuit.
Over the years, BMW Motorsports has managed a number of successful victories on the demanding course. The winning triumphs channeled an ideal foundation to select one of the automakers best handling, track oriented performance products, the M3, to be selected for a limited production run just before the model is scheduled to be replaced early next year.
Until this point, there has never been a Lime Rock Park Edition of any car. For both BMW and Lime Rock Park, this limited production M3 becomes a celebration of a car and track that have a long history together. And now, this distinctive BMW M model has been designed to be the perfect car for a classic track.
At first glance, the rare Fire Orange paint is immediately apparent, and stirs prompt attention. The M3 Lime Rock edition continues on BMW M tradition with aggressive styling cues, and a wide body stance that makes this car instantly present on the road and track. Throughout the week of driving through beautiful South Florida, onlookers couldn’t resist to catch a glimpse of this truly legendary automotive machine.
To differentiate this track inspired M3 edition, a standard lower carbon fiber front valence wraps around the front end, while the theme continues to the back of the vehicle with an full composite carbon fiber roof panel, as well as a unique carbon fiber rear deck spoiler. Also available, and added to this M3, was the highly desired Competition package, which includes Dynamic Damper Control and stunning 19” Y Spoke alloy wheels.
Underneath the rear of this M3, a lightweight titanium M performance tuned exhaust is sure to please the soul, and nearly eliminates the need for any type of sound system to carry musical tunes on the interior. At higher RPMs, and during higher speeds, the exhaust delivers the nearly perfect note of exactly what a raw, natural V8 should sound like.
On the interior, the driver is immediately greeted by a track inspired Alcantara-covered flat bottom steering wheel. Anthracite and black cloth seating surfaces will keep passengers well planted while carving tight corners. The updated I-Drive system still lacks intuitive control, but is certainly better then previous generations. However, in a car like this, why even require entertainment systems when there is a screaming V8 engine under the hood that offers plenty of satisfaction.
A signature BMW M 6-speed manual gearbox, geared perfectly for the track, will get this 414 horsepower, 4.0 liter naturally aspirated V8, to 60 mph in just under 4.5 seconds. Although this M3 isn’t the fastest, it sure feels and sounds fast.
The select few who are able to obtain this street legal racecar, will take pride in the Lime Rock Edition custom plaque that denotes the production number, and underlines the exclusivity of the only 200 models in existence. Also unique to the M3 Lime Rock Park edition is a specific track outline decal on the left rear-quarter window.
This rare M3 completely translates the spirit of what the BMW M car stands for. Its superb handling characteristics and linear driving dynamics allow a factory production car to offer a nearly perfect balance on and off the track. The M3 Lime Rock Park edition can simply be explained as a truly exhilarating driving experience.
Want one? Well, it may turn out to be a difficult challenge, as all Lime Rock Park limited edition M3s have already been spoken for. When production was announced last spring, the company said they would only build 25 units per week, which led to a short production run of just 2 months! This particular model fitted with its select options brought the MSRP to just $77,395. A complete bargain for what has been recognized as the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.
