The 2013 ENnies nominations have been announced and voting is now open. I spoke with Simon Berman, Community Coordinator & Staff Writer, about Privateer Press’ recent ENnie nominations.
Privateer Press’ nominations are many for the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying Game, including the Core Rules for Best Cover Art, Best Game, Best Production Values, Best Rules, and Product of the Year. The Iron Kingdoms introductory adventure, Fools Rush In, has also been nominated for Best Free Product ENnie. In addition to all that, Privateer Press has also been nominated in the Fans’ Favorite Publisher Category. My relationship with Privateer Press goes way back — I worked on the original D20 version of the role-playing game.
Voting begins on Monday, July 22 and runs to Wednesday, July 31. The ceremony itself will be on Friday, August 16, in the Union Station Grand Hall at 8 pm with the cocktail reception beginning at 6:30 pm.
Michael Tresca (MT): Tell us about Privateer Press’ origins.
Simon Berman (SB): Privateer was founded in December 2000 originally to publish the d20 Iron Kingdoms setting. Since then we’ve expanded with our award winning WARMACHINE and HORDES games, set in the acclaimed Iron Kingdoms world setting as well as a number of popular board games in other unique settings.
MT: Have you had any other products nominated for ENnies in the past?
SB: We’ve even won a few! Beginning in 2001 when we won Best Setting for the Iron Kingdoms and Best Publisher our books and games have been nominated and won a number of ENnies in a number of categories including Best Writing, Best Cover Art, and Best Cartography.
MT: Why should voters vote for Privateer Press?
SB: We are extremely proud of our new version of the Iron Kingdoms Roleplaying Game. The game mechanics are inspired by the rules system of WARMACHINE, our award winning miniatures wargame. The core rule book is lavishly illustrated and contains an innovative dual-career system. As well, it’s an opportunity for us to further explore the deep setting of the Iron Kingdoms developed over the past decade.
MT: How has Kickstarter changed or influenced your business model?
SB: It’s letting us explore new media! We’re currently running a massively successful Kickstarter in support of our WARMACHINE: Tactics video game. We hit our goal of $550,000 in less than 35 hours and as I write this we’re at over a million dollars with 15 days to go!
MT: What’s next for your company?
SB: This year we’re releasing the second core book for our Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying Game: Kings, Nations, & Gods as a Gen Con pre-release. We’re continuing to expand our explosively popular wargames WARMACHINE, and HORDES, releasing the second stand-alone game in our LEVEL 7 board game line, and launching our highly anticipated deck building game High Command. And of course, that’s just the next few months, we’ve got even more lined up that I can’t talk about just yet!
MT: Will you be at Gen Con? Where?
SB: Absolutely! Look for us at booth #513. Please drop by and grab a copy of our new Iron Kingdoms release, get a demo of one of our many games, or just talk with our staffers!
