I recently had the opportunity to interview Marc Lapine, Ford Motor Company’s F-150 Consumer Marketing Manager while simultaneously conducting a POV test drive of the 2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost. Linked up through Ford’s Sync system by Microsoft, the vehicle and technology performed flawlessly and allowed me to ask Marc a few questions about the truck while driving it. Consider it an industry first!
POV test drive: 2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost review & interview with Marc Lapine of Ford Motor Company
For those of you unfamiliar with Marc’s work, he’s the one responsible for developing and executing the F-150 EcoBoost torture test; one of the most rigorous tests ever placed on a Ford vehicle. Put through the punishment of one hellish truck test after another, the EcoBoost platform performed flawlessly and is guaranteed to meet the needs of today’s demanding truck owner.
“We knew the EcoBoost was a great truck engine, but initial research showed that core truck customers had concerns about the durability of a turbocharged gas V6 engine in a truck. The EcoBoost Torture Test was designed to put a single EcoBoost engine through a durability cycle both in the lab and in the real world that would be more extreme than we would reasonably expect any customer to put it through. It culminated with a live engine tear down at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. I still have customers mention it to me.” – Marc Lapine, Ford Motor Company
What is most important to today’s truck owner? Fuel economy, chassis strength, and low-end torque. The F-150 EcoBoost meets and beats the competition in nearly every aspect and provides the ultimate platform for today’s consumer and commercial level truck user. Running a bold twin-turbocharged 12 PSI and creating 420 foot pounds of torque at just 2,500 RPM, the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine has more than enough power to pull a maximum of 11,300 pounds!
My impression of the F-150 EcoBoost is that this truck is worthy of ownership. Ample amounts of low-end power, a very responsive yet controllable throttle, and a smooth yet aggressive ride that allows tow control and comfort simultaneously. The interior space is ergonomically designed to provide for maximum ease, exit, and operation of the massive yet nimble truck. High quality, renewable materials found throughout offer a top-shelf prestige effect but yet are extremely durable and totally stain resistant; all while staying as green as possible.
Overall, Ford did a great job and I highly recommend this vehicle if you are in the market for a modern-age truck with great fuel economy, excellent capability, and vast interior comfort!
Special thanks to AutoNation Ford in Brooksville, Florida for access to such an incredible vehicle!
