Funny Car driver Ron Capps took home the Wally from the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday, his second win of the season in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also took home wins from Sonoma Raceway in California.
Capps, the No. 3 qualifier in Funny Car, used round wins over Del Worsham, Jeff Arend and Courtney Force to reach the final-round match-up against John Force. It was Capps’ fourth final-round appearance this season.
Langdon, who qualified No. 6 in Top Fuel, beat Morgan Lucas in the final round after getting wins against Bob Vandergriff, Doug Kalitta and Antron Brown. It was Langdon’s fourth win of the season in six final-round appearances.
“This is a dream season,” said Langdon. “To get four wins at this point in the season feels like we have a strong car. Racing Morgan was pretty cool because we grew up together and went to high school together. A lot of memories racing with friends.”
Nobile took on some of the Pro Stock category’s best drivers on his way to the finals, beating Jason Line, points leader Mike Edwards and Greg Anderson on his way to the final-round match-up with Jeg Coughlin Jr. It’s Nobile’s second win of the season.
Arana Jr. returned to form in the PSM ranks, earning wins against Scotty Pollacheck, Jerry Savoie and Katie Sullivan on his way to the finals against Matt Smith. It’s Arana Jr.’s fourth win of the season, his first since Houston in April.
“It was nice to have a little momentum to get back to the top,” said Arana Jr. “It had been a while for us. After I won those three races, I started to think about winning the race before winning the first round. Not anymore.”
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series gets back on track this weekend, August 2nd through 4th, at Pacific Raceways in Ken, Washington. The O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals will feature the Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock divisions. Keep up with the action at www.nhra.com.
