When the Richmond Greek Festival begins on Thursday, May 30, 2013, it will be celebrating its 30th year. The festival, known for its great food, is being held at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral Church on the corner Malvern and Grove Avenue. Several events here like the Greek Festival, are traditions that draw Richmond fans year after year. Another tradition is Innsbrook After Hours, in its 26th year, still having most of its concerts on Wednesday nights. Sponsored by Coors Light, Innsbrook After Hours has every type of band available, from popular to country to “old school”, including Former American Idol Chris Daugthry, whose concert was held on May 22nd. Upcoming is Sheryl Crow on June 13th. Concerts began on Wednesday, May 1st and will continue through the first week in September. Cary Street Watermelon Festival, will be held on August 11 this year and is celebrating its 30th birthday. Yes and you’ll find watermelon everywhere. It’s sponsored by Martins. Down to the South of Richmond, is another longstanding tradition, Pocohontas Premiers at Pocohontas State Park in Chesterfield. Here local and non-local bands play on week-end nights, with little or no fee. Local police are there to ensure that this experience is an enjoyable one for all.. Concerts will begin June 2 with the Richmond Youth Symphony. Bring your picnic lunch and enjoy the music. And last, but not least, Friday Cheers now at Brown’s Island, which began May 3rd and ends June 28th and features national bands. This series allows you to bring your own food or buy from local vendors. The concert series, presented by Coors Light with numerous sponsors, began 29 years ago by City Celebrations Downtown. Venture Richmond has produced this series for eight years.
Unfortunately, we lost Fridays at Sunset, which sponsored R&B groups and was last held at Kanawha Plaza.
