The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series visits Norwalk, Ohio’s Summit Motorsports Park for seventh annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, Thursday through Sunday, July 4th through 7th. The event features all four Mello Yello Drag Racing Series categories – Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle; the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Pro Mod Series will also be competing that weekend.
Three of last year’s four winners return to defend their titles at Norwalk – Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle). 2012 Funny Car winner Mike Neff returns in a different capacity, as tuner on John Force’s Castrol Mustang, which has competed in the last three final rounds on the schedule.
Summit Motorsports Park puts on a party for the NHRA Nationals, complete with the famous “one pound of ice cream for a dollar” and live music on the campgrounds for those staying at the track or just looking to avoid the traffic getting out of the track. There’s also a Friday night fireworks show in honor of our nation’s birthday.
On Thursday, July 4th, sportsman qualifying gets underway at 9 a.m. ET. On Friday, July 5th, sportsman eliminations begin at 8 a.m. ET, followed by qualifying for the Comp Eliminator and Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car classes beginning at 11:15 a.m.; ET Pro Mod qualifying sessions are at 4 and 6:30 p.m. ET, and pro qualifying sessions get underway at 4:45 and 7:15 p.m. ET.
On Saturday, July 6th, sportsman eliminations continue at 8 a.m. ET, followed by Comp Eliminator eliminations beginning at 9:15 a.m. ET. Top Alcohol qualifying continues at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the final Pro Mod session at 11 a.m. ET; the first round of Pro Mod eliminations takes place at 1:30 p.m. ET. Pro qualifying rounds at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. ET precede round one of Top Alcohol eliminations at 4 p.m. ET and round two of Comp Eliminator eliminations at 5 p.m. ET. Final elimination rounds kick off Sunday, July 7th at 11 a.m. ET.
