Seven of eight Top Fuel spots for the upcoming Traxxas Nitro Shootout at the Chevrolet Performance US Nationals are full, as are six of the eight spots in Funny Car. The Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Top Fuel will take place Saturday, August 31st, while the Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Funny Car will be held Sunday, September 1st. Spencer Massey (Top Fuel) and John Force (Funny Car) won the race-within-a-race bonus events last season.
Teams qualify for the Shootouts by winning an NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season event, holding the No. 1 spot in the standings after the event in Brainerd, Minnesota, or via a fan vote and lottery-style drawing. The Shootout awards $100,000 to the winners in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car events, along with $15,000 for the runners-up and $7,500 for the semifinal losers.
Top Fuel drivers qualified are Shawn Langdon, Tony Schumacher, Antron Brown, Spencer Massey, Bob Vandergriff, Steve Torrence and Khalid alBalooshi. Qualified Funny Car drivers are Courtney Force, Ron Capps, Johnny Gray, Cruz Pedregon, Matt Hagan and John Force.
Top Fuel drivers eligible for the fan vote are Doug Kalitta, Clay Millican, Morgan Lucas, David Grubnic, Brittany Force and Terry McMillen. Funny Car drivers eligible for the fan vote are Robert Hight, Jack Beckman, Tim Wilkerson, Del Worsham, Bob Tasca III, Alexis DeJoria, Jeff Arend and Tony Pedregon. Should the seventh position in Funny Car remain unfilled following the Brainerd event, the Funny Car driver who is highest in the Mello Yello Series points standings without a win will be inserted into that position.
Fan voting begins Sunday, August 18th at approximately 5 p.m. ET following the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd, Minn., and will run through Tuesday, August 27th at noon ET. Fan voting takes place at the NHRA Facebook page. The fan vote process will determine how many lottery balls are assigned to each fan-vote-eligible driver for the random lottery drawing, which will take place at the Chevrolet Performance US Nationals press conference/fan fest on Wednesday, August 28th at Monument Circle at downtown Indianapolis.
