For the 2014 model year, Chevrolet has made improvements to the Silverado that renew, refresh and revive the truck. Described as “new from hood to hitch”, the Silverado has bold exterior styling; a rich, comfortable cabin; a powerful, economical engine and innovative technology. In the appropriate surroundings of Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, near San Antonio, Texas, I was introduced to this amazing vehicle.
Besides design for appearance, which is strong and powerful, the Silverado is more aerodynamic. More efficient cooling is achieved with improved front-end sealing; airflow over the truck is smoothed with roof and tailgate spoilers; recessed doors reduce wind noise. The Silverado pickup box is made from roll-formed steel, which is stronger and lighter than the previous stamped bed. The new CornerStep bumper together with built in handholds gives easier access to the box. Also available are upper tie-down hooks, under rail lighting and the EZ lift and lower tailgate. (This really works! I can lower or lift this tailgate with just one finger! No crashing drops or slamming closed.) Also available on the Silverado 1500 for the first time is a 6’6” box as well as the standard 5’8” box.
Built for work, the Silverado has a functional interior that doesn’t scrimp on comfort or attractiveness. Multiple storage options will appeal to truck customers who can organize all kinds of work related items in a variety of types and sizes of compartments. All controls are designed and arranged for easy operation while wearing work gloves. Crew cabs now have larger rear doors for easier access; double cabs now have front-hinged rear doors.
Three all-new EcoTech engines are offered on the Silverado, one V-6 and two V-8s, delivering power for day-to-day driving, towing and hauling. Direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing are featured on all three engines, providing class leading fuel efficiency. I took advantage of the opportunity to tow a horse trailer with one of the V-8s, and although that is not something I am accustomed to doing, I found it easy, comfortable and not as scary as I expected! Fun actually!
Chevrolet MyLink provides powerful connectivity in the Silverado. There are multiple power and USB connections, making it highly functional as an office away from the office.
The driving experience in the Silverado is truly amazing. Besides the functionality for work, the Silverado is a great vehicle for recreation and family. All the improvements for aerodynamics, strength and efficiency also provide a remarkably quiet and smooth ride. The comfort of the seats, the convenience of the technology, the ease of handling all work together to make this truck appealing and desirable. It is new inside and out. But one thing is not new! That is the pricing! It remains the same for the standard models as in the 2013 model year. That is getting a whole lot for your money!
