The West Sonoma County Vintners association is hosting their 3rd annual West of West (WOW) wine festival this weekend, 2-4 August at The Barlow in Sebastopol. This is an unique opportunity to taste the wines and meet many of the winemakers from this small rugged area of west Sonoma County. It is also a great opportunity to experience The Barlow which is fast becoming a destination attraction in picturesque Sebastopol just 1 hour north of San Francisco.
The Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) stretches the entire western boundary of Sonoma County from south of Petaluma all along the Pacific to the Mendocino coast. The West Sonoma Coast has distinguished itself by earnings top honors around the world for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is the quality of these ultra premium cool climates grapes that have lead to the efforts afoot to establish ‘sub-appellations’ for several microclimates within the greater Sonoma Coast.
The WOW festival is an opportunity for these vintners, located in remote or ‘off the beaten path’ locations to showcase their exceptional wines in a venue that is accessible to a wider audience than the judges at the usual large wine competitions. The west Sonoma Coast region includes many distinct growing areas and exceptionally well known but hard to find wines (and wineries) including Benovia, Peay Vineyards, Hirsch Vineyard & Winery, Flowers Vineyard & Winery, Ramey Wine Cellars, MacPhail Family Wines, Failla, Kosta Browne, and Paul Hobbs Winery. If you have tasted any of these wines you know there is something very special about Sonoma Coast and especially the West Sonoma Coast.
The Festival includes Friday night Welcome Dinners which are hosted by member wineries and include the special opportunity to dine with the winemakers in their home or the winery. Saturday is loaded with seminars, vineyard tours and flight tastings. The culmination of the festival are two Grand Tastings on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Many of these events are already sold out but some tickets remain for Vineyard Tours and Sunday’s Grand Tasting at the Barlow.
The Barlow food and wine center is only recently opened and houses such well known and acclaimed names such as Duskie Estes and her zazu kitchen, Kosta Browne, La Follette and MacPhail Family wineries (among others), a couple brewing companies, a spirits distillery, a bakery, a community market and many, many more unique offerings.
WOW Wine Festival and The Barlow in Sebastopol are the place to be this weekend in all of northern California!
