Comedian Rob Delaney has a lot to be excited about. He’s just released a new board game, Rob Delaney’s War of Words, and is primed to release a new book later this year. Delaney will also be headlining The Wilbur Theatre on Friday July 26 and recently chatted with the Boston Comedy Scene Examiner about performing in his home town.
AF: Hey Rob, how are you?
RD: Very well, thanks, how are you?
AF: I’m doing well! So here we are, on the eve of your big Boston show, it’s very exciting to have you back.
RD: Thanks! I’m so excited.
AF: It must be a nice little treat for you to get to come to Boston and kind of come home.
RD: It’s the very very best.
AF: I have to say, I’m kind of addicted to your board game. My friends are all annoyed with me because I keep insisting they play.
RD: Why thank you!
AF: I love it, it’s such a unique idea. How did you come up with the idea to put out a board game?
RD: I one-hundred percent didn’t. The company, All Things Equal, approached me and asked if I was interested in doing that, and they’ve made a bunch of amazing games. So, I said yes, absolutely, although I had never thought to make one – I didn’t think I deserved one. I love playing board games and grew up playing them with my family and laughing so much, so the idea that anyone would want to make one out of my silly jokes was a huge honor, and so I said yes immediately.
AF: So aside from the game, tell me a little bit about what’s going on in your world right now.
RD: Well, I just finished a book, and it comes out in November. That is sort of the biggest relief, creatively, in my life right now is that it’s done and locked and loaded, and ready to enter the world. Touring, you know – working on a bunch of new material – and being a dad. Yeah, so that’s going on right now.
AF: That’s so exciting! Tell me a little bit about the book.
RD: It’s a memoir, and it’s just funny and crazy stories from my life. Even with that, I hadn’t thought, ‘Hey, the world needs a book about me.’ But a publisher approached me and had seen my stand up and read my magazine articles and said, ‘You should write a book, can we have one from you?’ Okay, sure. It took me just under two years to write, and soon people will get to read it which is very exciting to me.
AF: That’s awesome. It must be a huge relief that that is done and ready to go.
RD: The biggest. Yeah, writing a book is way harder than any other creative thing I’ve ever done, ever by many multiples.
AF: Well, congratulations on that. That’s quite an undertaking.
AF: So, being the official funniest person on Twitter, who are some of your most prized followers? Do you have any big time celebrity followers that you just get really excited about?
RD: Oh yeah, yeah. I was just reading tweets from Jon Wurster – he’s the drummer for Superchunk and the Mountain Goats, and he’s hilarious. He’s one of the funniest people ever. When he first started following me I got very excited. Peter Serafinowicz, a British comedian/writer. He’s amazing. Joan Rivers…yeah those are three people that I did back flips when they started following me.
AF: Yeah, when Joan Rivers follows you, you can pretty much say you did it.
RD: Yeah, yeah.
AF: Well, I hope you have a wonderful time in Boston. I’m assuming you’re already here?
RD: I am, yeah. Well, I grew up here, so I actually scheduled this show to coincide with a visit to family.
AF: Are they all coming out to your show?
RD: A bunch of them are. I have to figure out who’s going to watch my two little kids.
AF: It’s got to be difficult to be touring so much, especially as a father of small children.
RD: Well, I try to schedule it – this is a boring subject – but I try to schedule it so I’m home for two or three weeks uninterrupted, and then I leave for four days, hit four cities and then come right back. So it might seem like I always have dates scheduled, but I’m usually home.
AF: That’s great. It’s great you get to do it like that.
RD: I feel very fortunate that I do.
