If you’re on a mission to mem your ocean, May’s Seal o’ Piracy may strike you as counterproductive. To earn this month’s Seal, you need to complete 20 sea battles. But getting into battle disqualifies your current approach to the league point from counting towards its memorization.
The simplest solution is to just put your memming goals on hold for a short while. Join the pillages that pop up on your ocean’s Notice Board “Voyages” tab — or lead pillages yourself — and keep it up until you’ve been awarded your Seal. But if you, like me, are aiming to mem the whole ocean (or all the oceans) by the end of the year, a day without memming a league point is a sad day indeed.
So it’s a good thing you can do both at once, right? And I don’t mean duty navigating between battles on a regular pillage. I mean setting out with the explicit goal of memorizing a route in as few passes as possible but still logging a good 5 or 6 battles by the time the route’s turned brown. Even better, you stand a chance at winning a new-to-you chart!
The key is to keep track of which league points you’ve already memorized–and to have a quick finger on the “Turn About” button. Click through to the list for details…
Configuring the voyage
Configure your voyage for “Evade,” queue up a chart you’ve been meaning to mem, and chart your course. (In this example, Serenidad of the Jade Ocean is memming Isla Ventress to Isla Halley; nevermind that she happens to be starting at Isla Asteroidea.) Don’t forget to deselect Auto-Target!
Summon some swabbies aboard your sloop (evasion voyages aren’t usually much fun for jobbers). Jump on the duty navigation puzzle and set sail. If you score consistently well on the puzzle, you probably won’t see a single spawn for five or six LPs. (If a brigand or barbarian does pop up, you might as well engage. You’d have to turn about to avoid them anyway. Either way, you’ll want to sail back to the previous LP and start the league over for memming purposes.)
A battle in the last league
The last league before the island is where the magic happens. Just exit the duty nav puzzle and set sail. This will almost always summon a ship for you to fight. You’ll chalk up another battle toward your Seal. If you win, you might get a new chart to mem! (Meanwhile, you’ll mem the island league point by jumping up and down on the island.)
At each end of your route, check to see if you’ve memmed any of the LPs. Jot them down on your All Ocean Memorization Spreadsheet so that on subsequent approaches to those LPs you’ll know you’re free to invite another battle. In this way you’ll earn your Seal without unduly slowing down your memming efforts.
