Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was placed into solitary confinement as he sits in a Massachusetts jail for his own safety, according to a July 1, 2013, TMZ report.
According to the website, the move was made because authorities are worried other inmates may be anxious to gain some fame by harming the ex-New England Patriots tight end.
Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson told TMZ Hernandez was moved from the medical ward at the local jail to a “Class 2 Unit,” to keep him away from the rest of those incarcerated in general population.
As part of this confinement, he is only allowed out of his cell 3 hours each day with access to the outside yard, the jail phone, and the common room.
According to TMZ, officials will decide next week whether Hernandez will remain in solitary confinement or be moved to another unit.
Last week, a judge denied bond to Hernandez, noting she was worried he may be a flight risk.
He is charged in connection with the murder of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found not far from Hernandez’s home.
Authorities say Lloyd was shot once in the forearm, twice in the back, and twice in the chest.
