ABC’s newest reality competition series “Whodunnit?” premiered on June 23, 2013. The series focuses on 13 contestants who are living together in the same mansion, Rue Manor. One of the contestants, however, is really the murderer. It’s up to the other contestants in the house to sniff out the culprit. The last man or woman standing who can correctly identify the murderer in the mansion wins $250,000.
In each episode there is a murder that the contestants will have to investigate. They’re given a choice to visit one of three different places: the scene of the crime, the morgue, or the last place that the victim was known to be prior to death. Each are allowed to examine clues from the scene. Contestants are free to make pacts in order to glean information from other contestants on the locations they chose not to visit.
By episode’s end, each contestant is lead into a room where they give their version of what they think happened to the deceased and, per the credits, are given a written test as well. During dinner, the butler, Giles (Gildart Jackson, “Charmed”) announces the name of the one contestant who has come the closest to identifying the killer correctly and they are given immunity. Each of their fellow contestants is given an envelope. Based on how well they’ve pieced together the clues they were given, they are either listed “Spared” or “Scared.” Those with a “Scared” status are in danger of being eliminated and ending up the victim of the next “murder.” Overnight the killer strikes again and claims a new victim which sets up the next round of play.
The first episode revolved around the death of Sheri, an ex-NFL cheerleader. Each of the contestants examined the evidence and identified who they believed the killer to be. Sasha, a journalist from DC, was given immunity. The two contestants on the “Scared” list were Don, an ex-homicide detective and Dontae, an insurance investigator. Of the two, Dontae became the killer’s next victim.
“Whodunnit” was created by Anthony E. Zuiker. (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”)
