Shaun Royer is affectionately known amongst his peers as the “star maker,” and as I heard from his team, he has being instrumental in the careers of several very well known personalities including Hilary Duff, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, and even Christina Aguilera. While Royer’s work has taken him around the world, he has now brought his unique elixir of training Los Angeles. Teaming up with Michelle Darné, together they have launched the Professional Performing Arts Academy in Burbank, CA.
Heading over the hill into the valley, I was not expecting the outstanding red carpet launch event that I entered. Earlier in the day, Royer hosted a one-day only class for prospective students who were given the opportunity to be a part of the evening’s showcase working alongside Step Up 3D (Disney), Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Cheaper By The Dozen‘s Alyson Stoner. Royer put the student’s through a dynamic rehearsal, demonstrating his unique acting and performing techniques. Within hours, they took the stage with a fully choreographed routine which we all enjoyed immensely, Royer summed it up by saying “… it takes a bit of determination, a great support system and the ability to be ready when your time comes.”
Of course, all the girls almost fainted when Drake Bell (Superhero Movie (Dimension Films, MGM), Drake & Josh (TeenNick, Nickelodeon), Yours Mine & Ours (Paramount Pictures), Jerry McGuire (Sony)) waltzed in, followed by industry heavy weight Gary Goldstein (Producer, Pretty Woman). Other VIP’s I saw around the room included Tekken co-star Anton Kasabov, Taylor Hay (Teens Wanna Know), Jaida Benjamin (The Onion News Network), and Elias Washington (Hope For Love).
Michelle Darné shared with us Academy’s core mission is to produce entertainment professionals that will define the industry in the coming decade: professionals that will challenge what is possible when it comes to technical skill as much as the influence that their talent can have on shaping society.
The evening was a great success. Produced by my dear friend Eva di Shanni, the buzz of excitement was palatable… the Academy is definitely a new home for burgeoning talent and with the skills and techniques of Mr. Royer, one can only imagine how many of tomorrow’s stars will be discovered and crafted inside their doors.
