Beginning today, Grassroots North Carolina will air “[a] series of at least 60 radio spots targeting the University of North Carolina system and its president, Tom Ross” at stations “in Raleigh, Greensboro and Asheville [to] focus on UNC’s malfeasance in protecting students from sexual assault and other violent crime,” the statewide gun rights group announced this morning in a press release.
“Ross and university representatives oppose House Bill 937 [currently passed from the House and in the Senate Rules and Operations Committee after passing first reading], which would enable concealed handgun permit-holders to better defend themselves by keeping firearms in locked vehicles on college campuses, claiming it would hamper campus police in ‘protecting’ UNC students,” GRNC explained as their reason for the media campaign.
Providing examples of how anti-gun policies fail to provide the “protection” officials claim as their reason for imposing them, GRNC related that “[j]ust hours after … University officials testified against HB 937, a student was raped outside the NCSU Free Expression Tunnel. Another was robbed at knife point near Reynolds Coliseum two days later.”
Citing a federal investigation of UNC Chapel Hill “for deliberately under-reporting campus sexual assaults as required by federal law” over a period of years, an expulsion threat against a student “for merely naming her rapist,” and the resignation of the Elizabeth City State University chancellor amidst “reports that ECSU failed to investigate 125 criminal complaints, including 18 sexual assaults, going back to 2007,” GRNC is urging supporters to “Call Senate Leader Phil Berger and tell him to pass campus carry [at] 919-733-5708” as well as their own state senator.
They’re also urging supporters “to contact the UNC Board of Governors, alumni associations and others to deliver the message that as long as UNC opposes HB 937, under which concealed handgun permit-holders could better protect themselves on campuses where college officials clearly can’t protect them, they will withhold financial support from UNC institutions.”
The radio spot can be listened to using the media player embedded in this column’s sidebar. For more information on Grassroots North Carolina, including how to join and support their mission, visit the GRNC website at www.grnc.org/.
