During Tuesday night’s edition of “The Voice,” viewers heard Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine proclaim, “I hate this country,” Mashable reported.
“Week after week,” Brian Anthony Hernandez wrote, Levine “urges Americans to vote for the contestants he mentors on NBC’s The Voice.”
But right after voters eliminated two of his early frontrunners, he uttered the statement, catching viewers off guard.
Twitchy said that a number of people weren’t happy with his declaration.
“Not a smart move dude, not smart at all,” one person tweeted.
“No one is keeping you here, Adam,” another person said.
“Hey @adamlevine this country you apparently hate so much made you rich. You’re free to leave. Try Syria. I hear it’s nice this time of year,” added “LilMissAuditThis.”
“I sense an apology forthcoming,” tweeted “NDM.”
Instead of apologizing, Levine tweeted dictionary definitions for joke, humorless, lighthearted and misunderstand, in an apparent attempt to dismiss the furor over his remark.
“Translation: You guys are idjits and I’m not apologizing,” the Twitchy staff wrote, comparing it to anti-Mormon remarks he tweeted last August.
While some supported his attempt at an explanation, others did not.
“I think we understood your ‘I hate this country’ comment clearly, @adamlevine. It’s not a joke, not lighthearted. We know you well,” tweeted “Rick Canton.”
Video of the incident can be seen here. The comment can be heard at about the 1:14 mark.
Update: In a statement to Us Weekly, Levine said he loves the country, and attributed his comment to frustration.
“I obviously love my country very much and my comments last night were made purely out of frustration,” he said.
