Home Hacks: Five small, affordable changes lead to big savings
These days everyone’s budgets are stretched thin – from childcare expenses to gas, food and bills, and families are looking for ways to save money in every corner of life. An easy place to start is at home, where a few small changes can make a big financial difference. United Real Estate (www.unitedrealestate.com), an urban-centric real estate company, has put together a list of five easy, affordable home “hacks” that can lead to big savings, especially for new homeowners – they include:
Combat water waste
Bathrooms are often the number one culprits of water over usage, whose expenses can quickly add up one flush at a time. By simply placing a 20 oz. or 32 oz. bottle filled with water in the toilet tank, homeowners can help reduce water use and can save roughly $40 a year.
Keep your water heater cozy
For most of us, nothing is better than a long, hot shower at the end of the day – but we know getting the water to that optimal temperature can cost money. For a simple way to save, insulate your water heater with a heat blank and cut approximately $50 off your bill in a year. Side note: Remember to leave holes in the blanket for your temperature gauges so you don’t accidentally void your warranty.
Tap into your green thumb
We all try to incorporate a little green into our diets to stay healthy, but grocery store produce can be expensive (and go bad quickly to boot). By setting up a home garden, either outside or inside the house, you can save more than $10 a week from your grocery store bill. In addition, the waste left over from your fruits and veggies can be used to start a compost pile, which will not only help you reduce your trash output but will also save you on fertilizer and dirt for your yard year over year.
Stop the energy suck
Appliances can really suck…energy that is. Our homes all have outlets crammed full of plugs, where we often leave objects that we rarely used guzzling electricity (and costing us money, even when turned off). Gadgets like smartphones, laptops and toasters that don’t need a constant charge can be kicked of their energy-sapping habit by the installation of one power strip that cuts power to all devices with the flip of a switch. For the bigger appliances, invest in models that are energy efficient to help you reduce unwanted costs.
Flip the switch on savings
Most of us know by now that by switching to more efficient light bulbs we can save money – but it can also help you reduce your impact on the environment. By switching to CFL bulbs in your house, you can save around $150 (about $9 per bulb) a year, while also reducing your carbon dioxide emissions by 1,877 pounds at the same time, saving money and the planet at the same time!
For homeowners, especially first-time buyers, small adjustments can really add up to big savings. By making a few modifications to your style of living, you can use the savings to spruce up your house, take a nice trip or save up for that something big!
