If one name has brought the definition to summer flops over the past few years, it would M.Night Shyamalan. The director who once dazzle the silver screen with film such as The Sixth Sense has been rendered as a joke due to several of premises being laughable: from killer plants to creating a poor rendition to a great tv show. Now M.Night has returned (as much as the advertisement would deny it) and he teams with Will Smith to bring After Earth. The new sc-fi film features Will Smith and his son, Jaden, who play a father son duo who find themselves stranded on Earth, which has seen a several changes in the past 1000 years.Together, the team of Will Smith and M.Night Shylaman bring a summer film that could a new perspective in the sci-fi genre; unfortunately, the only thing After Earth does is continue a trend of bad films from the director.
The film’s story has almost no substance to it. The plot can be look like a simple adventure, but the theme is hard to get behind because of film’s dull execution. The issue is that After Earth has a character driven story with Will Smith and Jaden Smith being the audience’s guide. The problem is that neither of their characters are interesting, thus giving the story a major crutch.
Seeing that this sci-fi film only has two main characters, all eyes are on them; and as it has already been pointed out, it does not turn out well. Will Smith as Cyrus Raige has little to no emotion making it impossible to understand his character. Though the film gives a reason why Smith’s character is emotionless, it is still executed poorly. Jaden Smith on the other hand is a little better as Kitai; however, his performance are hit an miss. You can tell that Jaden is trying, but the character of Kitai is bland, which hinders the relationship between him and his robotic father.
When going to After Earth, moviegoers should expect a futuristic sci-fi element. The design to this futuristic film is sleek, but there is no details to this sci-fi element. Take the future earth for example. In a matter of concept, the planet stands out; but the ideas that makes up this Earth are so ludicrous, it makes Star Wars planets look scientifically sound. The problem is that After Earth never gives moviegoers an understanding of the world that they are thrown in to; only that its Earth 1000 years into the future and it is all mans fault in why the planet is uninhabitable. That’s about it.
On a high note, James Newton Howard once again gives a great score suited for a much better film.
It is hard to be aggravated with After Earth at this point because when it comes down to it, the new movie is just your average M.Night film. The movie tries to be too creative for its own good, and overall, the film is just boring. When it comes down to it, After Earth is another Shyamalan film that you can skip.
