Looking for a futuristic story that brings action, adventure, and amazement, then this is the film for you. This original story will bring you into a world, our world, so far in the future you won’t even recognize it.
1000 years after the Earth’s atmosphere was destroyed by man and weather, its descendants are living on a planet that is a place of danger. The aliens that inhabit this planet called Nova Prime are hostel to humans and set out to kill them. When Cypher Raige (Will Smith) figures out how to defeat them by not having fear and becoming a ghost image to them, the human race is able to fight back.
When Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) takes the test to become a ranger he does the best out of the class in the classwork and exercise workouts, but does not show well in emotions. When he meets with the advancement officer he is denied because he did not show that he was ready for the field. Kitai wants to do whatever it takes to prove to his father that he is ready and to make him proud.
When Cypher returns from a mission, he decides with the encourage of his wife, Faia Raige (Sophie Okonedo), to bring his son Kitai on a training mission that will give him the experience he needs to advance to ranger and spend some father and son bonding time together. During the journey to the training planet, the spaceship encounters an asteroid storm that damages the ship and forces them to find a place to crash land. The only planet close enough is earth, a level one planet that is forbidden and unlawful to land on because of its dangerous inhabitants. After the crash that separated the tail of the ship from the front, it is determined that a signaling beacon needs to be launched for a rescue. With Cypher having two broken legs, it is up to Kitai to make the 100 mile journey across dangerous terrain to find the beacon and launch it.
Director M. Night Shyamalan brings an original Sci-fi story with the help from writers Gary Whitta and Will Smith that gives an interesting view of what life would be like on earth without man. Shyamalan does an excellent job with building up the characters that ultimately leads to a dangerous adventure to save their lives. The special effects were realistically amazing and helped make the story believable. He brings the inhabitants to life that actually became characters of their own with the believable computer generated illustrations used to create them.
This story is a fantastic view of earth’s possible future that includes incredible special effects with the animals used in the film, such as, evolved cougars, condors, snakes, spiders, baboons, and wild boars. They seemed so realistic they became characters themselves. They also did a wonderful job with the Aliens, and the futuristic look with the planet scenery. This would be a great film for all ages 13 and up.
