There are times that you see a game, get excited and can’t wait to get a system capable of running the game at a high level. Ever have a game like that? If you are a gamer then the answer is a resounding yes! But how many of you have also been burned by a dud of a game? Either it flopped on its own or just couldn’t live up to the hype. My most recent gaming disappointment was Age of Conan: Unchained. Normally I would link this but seriously cannot think of any person I would want to actually play the game.
If you like button mashing games then you will probably love Conan MMO. I tried three times to start a toon. Highest I made it was a Stygian Necromancer. Then it was only level 8. It is just so boring. Rinse and repeat. Ding a level and the game opens up your next available spell and slots it in for you. Just button mash. Over and over and over. Conan does have a following so apparently there are enough people who enjoy that style of play to keep it running.
I grew up reading the tiny paperbacks of Conan the Barbarian. I loved them. Read every single one of them. Simple in some aspects of how short they were but it was exactly what I needed: A short break from life to read about a super human warrior. The prowess, the womanizing, the drinking, the stealing and the waves of destruction. If that is the same book you read then you will probably be as equally disappointed in the MMO.
AoC has a F2P option so if anything you can test it out on your own without any fear of losing money. But be warned: You are just there to mash buttons. Player creativity seems to have taken a back seat to something. Not sure what but something in the game was more important to the designers/programmers than player control of their own toons. You do get some skill points but when you only have two skills and both get capped while having spare points, rather makes you wonder why they even had you decide what to raise?
The controls are not much better either. If you are an avid strafing gamer then be prepared to be steering a tug boat. Your strafe circle of death can now go around a small shack. Imagine the turning radius of a stretched limo. It has a combat system that is based upon a shield/defensive option. Basically you decide what direction attacks come from based on how the target is guarding. Theoretically that is to say. The damage doesn’t seem to change much even if you hit them on an open side. Some combo moves are available so if you attack with a special ability and hit the directional it will pull off a different attack for more damage. But that is not on every attack so some toons won’t get that experience for some time I would imagine. If at all for some classes.
I hate writing negative feedback but there really was not one thing I enjoyed so much to make me want to continue past level 8. A level that many of us gamer think of as just a blip on our journey to whatever cap they have. So you can only imagine how repetitive it gets if by level 8 you would rather delete your toons than try anything else.
So yes, good chance that game will be deleted soon from my HD. If someone does play Conan MMO and can give me some experienced feedback (i.e. anything in the upper 20’s or so), I would appreciate it greatly. I just don’t like the idea that several people all agreed that this was the best way to bring about Conan to the world of MMO.
I mean did they even read the original stories at all?
Off to check out World of Tanks F2P. Mayhap that will get this awful taste out of my mouth.
Until next time!
