Alexis Wright, the 30-year-old, Zumba fitness instructor who pleaded guilty in March to running a prostitution service out of her Kennebunk, Maine dance studio, was sentenced on May 31 to ten months behind bars.
Wright had previously pleaded guilty to a variety of misdemeanor charges which included “prostitution, conspiracy, tax evasion, and theft by deception,” according to U.S. News.
The Zumba fitness instructor entered into a plea deal on March 30 which guaranteed her at least ten months in prison, but also spared her from a high-profile public trial “featuring sex videos, exhibitionism and pornography.”
Wright was accused along with insurance agent Mark Strong in operating the highly profitable prostitution ring out of her dance studio, secretly videotaping sex acts with her clients and netting $150,000 over an 18-month period.
Her cohort in crime, Mark Strong, was convicted in March on 13 counts of prostitution-related charges, and got off with only 20 days in prison – a sentence that was ultimately “reduced by five days for good behavior.”
In court today, Wright’s attorney painted his client as a victim who had endured a childhood filled with sexual abuse. Through her tears, the former madam told the judge that upon her release from prison, she wants to work with other women whose lives have been affected by abuse.
“It’s my intention to stand up for what is right. When I’m out, I’m going to pursue helping people fight through situations that are similar to mine. I’m optimistic that something good will come out of this.”
In addition to her jail time on those 20 counts of prostitution, conspiracy, tax evasion, and theft by deception, Alexis Wright will also be paying more than $57,000 in fines.
