Amazon.com is one of the most innovative and successful companies in the world. Although it started humbly as an online bookstore in 1994, in a span of less than 20 years Amazon has exploded into a global enterprise that helps millions of people buy and sell a myriad of items daily. Recently, Amazon has expanded its services to include business opportunities for users such as being able to publish a book with Amazon Publishing, get a movie produced with Amazon Studios, design clothes for Amazon Fashion, and much more—the list of possibilities grows more and more every year.
Most recently, Amazon Publishing announced a new program that will allow writers to publish fan fiction based on their favorite television shows—and get paid for doing so! This opportunity is being offered through a program called “Kindle Words.” Currently, the program is open to Amazon Publishing authors. However, anyone who is interested in writing for this program should seriously consider emailing Amazon to find out how to submit work—both Amazon and the television show producers are always looking for talented writers, after all.
According to the official announcement by Amazon:
“Kindle Worlds is the first commercial publishing platform that will enable any writer to create fan fiction based on a wide range of original stories and characters and earn royalties for doing so. As with Kindle Serials and Kindle Singles, we hope to open up new ways for authors to write and provide readers with an innovative way to experience great writing. Amazon Publishing has secured licenses from Warner Bros. for “Gossip Girl,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “Vampire Diaries,” and plans to announce more licenses soon. Through these exclusive licenses, Kindle Worlds will allow writers everywhere to publish authorized stories inspired by these popular Worlds and make them available for readers to purchase in the Kindle Store. In June, the Kindle Worlds Store will launch and at that time, the Kindle Worlds Self-Service Submission Platform, where any writer can submit work, will also open.”
This is an incredible opportunity for writers, especially for writers who are familiar enough with certain television shows to feel confident that they could write screenplays that would effectively capture the characters, plots, and settings within those shows. It is a great way to gain writing experience, get your work read, and possibly open the door for bigger and better opportunities.
