“American Idol” 2013 resumed May 15 on FOX with the final performance show of season 12. The hour-long episode of the hit reality singing competition featured three songs each by Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, the two finalists still vying for the title.
The first round featured the two talented aspiring crooners singing tunes chosen for them by “Idol” producer Simon Fuller. Wearing a bejeweled white jumpsuit, Harrison was first to take to the stage, and delivered a pretty rendition of the Sarah McLachlan hit “Angel.” She was followed by Glover, who performed a beautiful version of the Adele tune “Chasing Pavements.” Although Randy Jackson praised both contestants for their efforts, he admitted to disliking the song choices, and gave the round one edge to Glover because “she took the song and tried to make more of it.”
Round two saw the girls performing their coronation singles, the songs that each will sing if crowned the winner of “American Idol” 2013 on May 16. Harrison was up first with the tune she had a hand in writing, the very country “All Cried Out,” and Glover followed with an uncharacteristically mainstream-sounding song of her own entitled “I Am Beautiful.” Nicki Minaj chose Glover as the winner of the round, based on her unusually “upbeat” sound, while Keith Urban favored Harrison’s offering.
The finalists closed out the show with a round of reprisals. Clad in a striking red dress, Harrison revisited “Up to the Mountain,” which drew the judges’ acclaim when she first performed it during Vegas week. It impressed yet again. Urban called it “beautiful” and Minaj called Harrison’s energy “so uplifting.” Jackson called it her best performance of the night and encouraged her to always stay connected to her “soul” no matter what. Finally, Mariah Carey seconded Jackson, and praised her ability to sing different types of songs.
Glover finished the final performances with a reprisal of “I Who Have Nothing,” which wowed the judges during the top 10 show. It was beautiful once again as she stood alone at the microphone, steam billowing around the stage. Urban looked blown away as he called her a “powerhouse singer,” and Minaj called her a “superstar.” Jackson declared “that girl can plum flat out sing” and deemed the effort “a winning performance.” Carey marveled over her “amazing voice.”
