The rift between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey has led many to believe that this season would be sure to produce high ratings. Apparently not everyone is a fan of drama and idol viewers have spoken. Many of the judges this season have already announced their departure after weeks of viewer speculation.
Nicki Minaj confirmed yesterday via Twitter that she would not be returning to Idol stating, “Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!” Nicki Minaj faced criticism this season for her tumultuous relationship with fellow judge Maraiah Carey. Fox, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment confirmed Minaj’s departure in a statement: “Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to American Idol and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.”
Mariah Carey’s announcement also came via Twitter, in a message posted by her public relations rep, PMK BNC: “W/ global success of “#Beautiful” @MariahCarey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol.”
Randy Jackson announced his departure earlier this month stating, “it was just time.”
Many speculate the low ratings this season is the cause of the judge panel shake up. Idol had the lowest number of viewers ever for a finale show.
