In a ceremony held today, May 14, at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, the Americana Music Association unveiled the nominees for the 2013 Americana Music Awards, which will be held Sept. 18 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Leading the nominees are relative newcomers Shovels & Rope with 4 nominations, followed by a pair of Americana legends, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller, who each have 3.
The nomination ceremony, which was broadcast live on AXS TV, kicked off with an all star tribute to the late George Jones, with Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller leading a band consisting of Fats Kaplin, Brian Owings, and Jay Weaver. Also performing during the nomination ceremony were Lisa Marie Presley and T Bone Burnett, The Milk Carton Kids, and Elizabeth Cook.
For the 2013 Album of the Year award, the nominees run the gamut from some of Americana’s most seasoned favorites to some of its hottest newcomers. Red hot duo Shovels & Rope bagged the biggest of their 4 nominations for “O’ Be Joyful.” Americana’s favorite sons Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller were nominated for their first collaborative album “Buddy & Jim.” Another pair of Americana giants, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, were nominated for “Old Yellow Moon.” Rounding out the Album of the Year nominees were “From the Ground Up”, the first studio album from John Fullbright and “Cheater’s Game” by yet another duo Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison.
The Song of the Year award nominees kept the multi-generational theme going with 2012 Americana Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Richard Thompson’s “Good Things Happen to Bad People” pitted against three shining stars in Americana’s youth movement. The Lumineers were nominated for megahit “Ho Hey”. Shovels & Rope received another nomination for “Birmingham.” JD McPherson was also nominated for “North Side Gal.”
The Artist of the Year category is a who’s who of Americana’s most legendary performers. The category features two of Americana’s greatest guitar legends, Buddy Miller and Richard Thompson, as well as two of its most storied vocal legends, Emmylou Harris and Dwight Yoakam.
If the previous categories gave any doubt that Americana is a hot commodity among young musicians, the Emerging Artist of the Year category removes all doubts. Award juggernauts Shovels & Ropes will duke it out with JD McPherson, Grammy nominee John Fullbright, and Milk Carton Kids.
The Duo/Group of the Year category could have just been shortened to Duo of the Year for 2013 as all 4 nominees were duos. Shovels & Ropes picked up their 4th nomination, pitted against fellow multi-award nominees Jim Lauderdale & Buddy Miller, Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison, and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell.
The Instrumentalist of the Year award reads like the greatest all-star house band in the world. Greg Leisz, a 2010 Americana Lifetime Achievement honoree, is nominated along with Larry Campbell, Doug Lancio, Jay Bellerose, and Mike Bub.
