A major veterinary group announced July 30 that a Florida animal doctor has won its “America’s Favorite Veterinarian” contest.
The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), the charitable arm of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), said that veterinarian Carlos Campos was chosen after a review of more than 1,100 nominations, which had been narrowed to 12 finalists. Campos was nominated by several of his clients at San Francis Veterinary Hospital in Spring Hill, Fla., according to the AVMF.
Here’s the winning entry:
“Words cannot ever being to express how much we adore Dr. Campos! He came highly recommended to us by our groomer shortly after he opened his practice – she, too, could not stop talking about him. Our old dachshund, Fritz, needed emergency surgery and Dr. Campos surely saved his life, but we also discovered he likely had Cushing’s disease. Dr. Campos was always kind and understanding as I pestered him with all my questions. I am a nurse and that certainly made me more annoying! Well, Fritz lived another year and when he began to succumb to his disease, I brought him in not realizing how sick he was. Dr. Campos in all his kindness gave me ‘the talk.’ It was difficult for me to finally realize I was receiving the talk. As an ICU nurse, I have had this talk with many human patients, but I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. He and his staff took their time, answered all my questions and were supportive with my decision to take him home to pass in peace. I will never forget that day as we said goodbye to a precious family member. Dr. Campos is still our veterinarian as we adopted Lola. He again got on the floor with her as she shook in the corner for her first visit. But as usual, Dr. Campos knows how to become fast friends with our furry family members! (He even stops in the waiting room to say ‘hello’ to our guinea pig, Lily, as she gets her nails cut! My daughter aspires to be just like him!) To sum up my admiration of Dr. Campos (and I tell him each time), ‘Are you sure you won’t start seeing humans?’”
The contest was designed to highlight the important role veterinarians play in promoting pet health.
