This is the final installment of this writer’s rewrite of his previous series on Angels. Please note that this Tree of Life displayed above is a little different from the usual one. If you read up on the Kabbalah, you will find the referent to the Ten Sefirot, the Realms of Existence through which pass the Emanations of the Divine. Look at the Chart above, and you will see that there is an “Eleventh Sephirah”, on the Path between Tiféret and Kéter. This invisible Realm is called Da’ath, which means “Knowledge”; it is also known as the “Abyss”. Da’at, (“Knowledge,”) is located on the Middle Pillar of the Tree of Life below Kether, and above Tiféret, lying also between Chokhmah and Geburah, and between Binah and Chésed.
Considering the Nature of Da’at, we will discuss the Archangel first, before the Angels. The Archangel of the Abyss is Abaddon, whose Name means “Destruction” or the “Destroyer”. There is some connection between Abaddon and She’ol, the Abode of the Dead in the Hebrew Scriptures. In Job 26:6 it is written:
She’ol is naked before Him, and there is no cover for Abaddon.
עָרוֹם שְׁאוֹל נֶגְדּוֹ וְאֵין כְּסוּת לָאֲבַדּוֹן
There are those who have attempted to equate Abaddon with Samael (“God’s Venom”) or Azrael (the Angel of Death), or even Satan (“the District Attorney”), but the Duties of Abaddon are different from theirs. Abaddon assists the Human Spirit across the Abyss, the final obstacle between Tiféret and Kéter. There is no mention of Da’at in the “Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom”, although there seems to be a referent or two in the Sefer Yetzirah. Da’at is in the “Abyss” (“She’ol”). Abaddon assists the Souls across the Abyss to return to God. When one has made it to the Abyss, Malkut disappears and Da’at appears manifest.
Da’at reflects the same Energy that is manifest in Malkuth, the Sefirah representing the Material World. Most of the correspondences for Malkut are also correct for Da’ath. How is this possible? The answer is complicated. It all has to do with the Doctrine of Sheviret HaKelim, (“Shattering of the Vessels”). Our original Existence, according to this Teaching, was in Spirit Form, directly in the Presence of the Ancient One, reflected through Keter. Himan Beings are in the current incarnate form, only waiting to return to God.
This Concept is very similar to the Buddhist Teaching that “in the midst of Samsara we are already in Nirvana”. This is identical to Metaphysical Teachings about “No separation”. We are already in the Presence of God at all Times; we are simply unaware of this.
The parallels between the Kabbalistic Crossing of the Abyss and some of the confrontations with so-called “Peaceful and Wrathful Visions” in the Tibetan Book of the Dead are quite astonishing.
In Nova Thought the Day for Da’at is Saturday, the Planet is Saturn, the Color is Indigo, and the Number is Five, relating to the Essence Principle. Thus, Da’at also refers to the Throat Chakra, the Vishuddhi. The Three Essence Runes are Gebo, Algiz, and Mannaz.
In the Teachings of Rudolph Steiner, there is the fascinating Idea that Human Souls originated on the Planet Saturn. The current Theosophical view in reference to this theory is that it is symbolic and not to be taken literally. It is important to remember that, from a Metaphysical point of view, we are never separated from the Divine at any Time.
Are there Angels in Da’at? This is a difficult question. There is a Class of Beings called the “Klippot” The Klippot (“Shells”), say the Kabbalists, are remnants of a prior Existence prior to the one described in Genesis. They are fragments, not focused or “whole” like Angels. They appear to be a “Necessary Evil”, as their Presence seems to be needed for the proper functioning of the Universe, just as Chaos is for Order. They are not truly Demonic, per se, but their Presence in the physical world can wreak havoc. The Occultist customarily acknowledges the Klippot prior to proceeding with a Ritual, particularly if the Procedure will involve Invocation. It is outside the scope of this article to discuss how this is done.
There is a Meditation Technique known as “Climbing the Tree of Life”. This is a long-term, very complex Technique, outside the scope of a short article like this one. However, it is certainly possible to connect with the Energies of every Level of the Tree of Life, and of course, dis-incarnation is not at all necessary.
To contact the Energy of Abaddon, say the following Affirmation.
I am now crossing the Rainbow Bridge over the Abyss. I am ready to follow wherever Abaddon leads me.
