Samael is a very complex Angelic character. The name means “the venom of God,” not to be confused with the Azrael, Abaddon, or Satan. Samael, often known as the “Silent Archangel” is mentioned in the Talmud as accuser, seducer, and destroyer, who slays humans with a single drop of poison.
Samael, like Azrael, has Twelve wings, and also holds full Archangelic status. Samael has the function of bringing Evil misfortunes and punishments upon Humankind, in God’s behalf. How does that work? As is stated in Isaiah 45:4-7, God is the Source of all:
So said YHVH to His anointed one, to Cyrus, whose right hand I held, to flatten nations before him, and the loins of kings I will loosen, to open portals before him, and gates shall not be closed.
I will go before you, and I will straighten out crooked paths; I will break portals of copper and cut off bars of iron.
And I will give you treasures of darkness, and riches hidden in secret places, in order that you know that I am YHVH Who calls [you] by your name-the Holy One of Israel.
For the sake of My servant Jacob, and Israel My chosen one, and I called to you by your name; I surnamed you, yet you have not known Me.
I am YHVH, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God: I will strengthen you although you have not known Me.
In order that they know from the shining of the sun and from the west that there is no one besides Me; I am YHVH and there is no other.
Who forms light and creates darkness, Who makes peace and creates evil; I am YHVH, Who makes all these.
Note the underlined verse. God creates Evil, but does not, apparently administer Evil directly. When God takes out the famous anger on the Hebrews or other Peoples, you may be assured, that Samael is ready to carry it out.
Talmudic literature associates Archangel Samael with Madim (the Planet Mars), which places Samael logically at Geburah domain of justice, security, punishment from God, under the Leadership of Khamael. This would make Azrael, and followers, members of the Serafim.
There are many Legends associated with Samael. For example, he was, it is said, the Angel who wrestled with Jacob in Genesis 32:25-32. Does this make sense? The Angel is referred to as an “Ish”, an Angel of Malkuth in Genesis 32:25. Then, in Genesis 32:32, Jacob calls the Angel an Elohim, the God Name also used for Angels of Netzach. Samael also is said to have planted the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden, and even to have possessed the serpent to tempt Eve. According to the Book of Enoch, he taught humans Magic and was directly involved in the Angelic miscegenation that produced the Nefalim, which would link with the B’nei Elohim, especially since Samael is also considered the Klipotic Archangel of Hod. Therefore, Samael is connected with at least Four Sefirot.
Let’s take a more logical look at Archangel Samael. Perhaps God truly does get angry, at Times, even to the point of destroying entire Civilizations, for example Sodom and Gommorah. Samael could have easily been the Third Angel that visited Abraham. Or, rather, perhaps a more Enlightened view might be gained by examining Scriptures from various Cultures.
The Law of Cause and Effect was taught by the author of Ecclesiastes:
In the morning, sow your seed, and in the evening, do not withhold your hand, for you know not which will succeed, this one or that one, or whether both of them will be equally good.
Buddhism and Hinduism teach about Karma (action), and Vipaka, (results). According to the Teachings of the Buddhist Samyutta Nikaya:
According to the seed that’s sown,
So is the fruit you reap there from,
Doer of good will gather good,
Doer of evil, evil reaps,
Plant the seed and you shall taste
The fruit thereof.
Is there a difference between these Two Teachings? Not really. Many commentators would argue that the Passage from Ecclesiastes is Theistic, and the Buddhist quote is Atheistic. Perhaps Samael is the Agent that brings about these results, good or bad! Rather than continue the bad Name that this Being has received over the past Three Thousand Years, let us, instead, honor Samael.
To connect with the Energy of Samael, say the following Affirmation:
I am now living a better Life, knowing that Samael will bring God’s rewards for all my actions, good or bad. My Karma is already improving.
