It is hard to believe that it has been six months since the horrific tragedy took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Too many lives were lost that day: six adults and 20 students.
In lieu of a birthday party for their child that was supposed to turn seven on June 8th, Jennifer and Matt Hubbard made a very special dedication to and for their little Catherine Violet Hubbard that perished that catastrophic day. Together with family, friends and Catherine’s thousands of supporters across the United States, Catherine’s parents want to live out their young daughter’s dream.
At the time of her demise, the six year old yearned to save animals and vowed to dedicate her life doing so. Catherine loved animals, was most comfortable around them, and cared for each animal she came across. As her mother quoted, “She came alive with love, our own miniature flame-haired Dr. Doolittle.”
Most parents know how special their children are, but it is not as often realized by the outside world but Catherine was special. “It was as if she couldn’t contain her need to care about every living thing,” the young girl’s mother added. Many were able to witness the love and affection that the child displayed.
Even at the tender age of six, Catherine knew that she wanted to grow up and remain involved with animals, so her dream was to open her very own animal shelter. She already had her very own business cards created and everything!
So to fulfill her mission, the family requested, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made for a local animal rescue organization, The Animal Center, right in Newtown. The donations would go to honor the memory of a young animal rescuer at heart.
As the idea caught on and Americans heard about the selfless act of the parents suffering a terrible, heartbreaking loss, to carry out their child’s goal, they decided to kick in. An outpouring of donations has flowed in, so much so indeed that the Hubbards, in combination with The Animal Center will be able to fulfill Catherine’s ultimate wish. Rescued animals of all sizes, shapes and varieties will be able to go to the new Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary to be located in Newtown as well. Just think, if a child can dream this up, why can’t we all drive forward and successfully fulfill the goals of making this world a better, more loving place?
If you care to add to the dream, there is a way that you, too, can become involved. Thank you Catherine Violet Hubbard for your simple acts of kindness that has led to a great deal of kindness that may not have happened without your influence! Thank you also to the Hubbards for being strong, kind and loving people that are seeing the positive in light of a negative situation!
