“Anna Nicole” runs though the star’s life, jumping through dramatized scenes of that were publicized after her death. The movie would be very difficult to follow for viewers who did not follow the dramatic news reports of her death and the aftermath. While the film seems sympathetic to Anna Nicole, they do not make her particularly likable. The movie seems to race through the key scenes in her life, but much more could have been included with more time.
“Anna Nicole” follows he rise and fall of the woman who became as famous for the way she lived as for her modeling and acting career. Smith was a Texas high school dropout and single mother who accepted a job as a topless dancer, where she met octogenarian billionaire J. Howard Marshall (Martin Landau). Virgie (Virginia Madsen) is Smith’s mother.
Anna Nicole made headlines when she shockingly married Marshall, becoming the subject of jokes by late night comics for marrying a man old enough to be her grandfather. When they wed, Anna Nicole was 26 and her wealthy groom was 89. He proposed many times before she accepted. She left immediately after the wedding for a photo shoot, putting her fame and career ahead of her marriage to the man who lavished extravagant gifts on her.
Her career blasted off when Playboy featured her in a pictorial spread that evokes comparisons to blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, a pop icon that Smith idolized. Marshall died and distraught Anna Nicole went to his funeral wearing her white wedding dress. His financial support was withdrawn and she had to move out of her house. She went on a binge of pill-popping, excessive drinking and hard partying and her weight fluctuated drastically.
Anna Nicole sued Marshall’s estate for her inheritance, but was blocked by his son E. Pearce Marshall (Cary Elwes) every step of the way. Anna Nicole and ..E. Pearce Marshall are now both dead, but the case is still in court.
With the help of her adoring lawyer, Howard K. Stern (Adam Goldberg), Anna Nicole started a reality television show, opening her life and the life of her son Daniel (Graham Patrick Martin) to public scrutiny.
Anna Nicole decided that she wanted to have a baby and Larry Birkhead made a brief appearance in the movie. She was delighted when her baby was born but her happiness was cut short when her son Daniel died of a drug overdose.
She was overcome with grief after her son died and she passed away of an overdose herself several months later.
The movie ended with Anna Nicole’s death in 2007. The story of her life continued in the news with the court battle for custody of her infant daughter Dannielynn. Howard K. Stern claimed to be the father of the baby but DNA tests proved that Larry Birkhead was the biological father. The battle for a portion of the Marshall estate continues. Dannielynn is being raised by her biological father Larry Birkhead.
“Anna Nicole” is executive produced by Verno’s Peace Out Productions and Zadan and Meron’s Storyline Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television. Mary Harron (“American Psycho”, “I Shot Andy Warhol”) directed the screenplay by John Rice and Joe Batteer (“Blown Away”, “Chasers”).
