In what appears to be an attempt to advance the homosexual movement in America, while completely ignoring what the bible says, the AP published a story on Sunday [Gay, evangelical, and seeking acceptance in church] in which it highlights what they describe as evangelical Christians embracing homosexuality and struggling “to reconcile their beliefs and their sexual orientation.”
The AP begins by saying:
“Evangelicals are being challenged to change their views of gays and lesbians, and the pressure isn’t coming from the gay rights movement or watershed court rulings.”
The report then goes on to mention multiple examples of young Christians embracing both their homosexuality and their Christian faith.
The assumption the AP seems to make is that anybody who claims to be an “evangelical Christian” is actually one, and that their expressed opinions on the matter of homosexuality should, therefore, be afforded complete, unquestioned credibility.
History clearly warns about this. [Video: God & Hitler] Hitler, for example, before coming to power, also used the “Christian” angle as part of his strategy to not only fool the masses, including the Catholic church, but to ultimately gain the kind of power needed to commit the atrocities that he did.
As “evidence” that evangelical Christians are increasingly embracing homosexuality, the AP goes on to say that “students and alumni from Christian colleges have been forming gay and lesbian support groups.”
The AP also lists a number of individuals who identify themselves as Christians, who have dealt with homosexuality in their personal lives, and who have published memoirs that, as the AP mentions, “prod traditional Christians to re-examine how they think about gays and lesbians.”
Furthermore, the AP also quotes an individual who apparently teaches at a “conservative, Anglican seminary,” a published author by the name of Wesley Hill.
Mr. Hill is quoted as saying, “There are a growing number of us who grew up hearing a certain origin story about our same-sex attraction that didn’t resonate with us,” he says.
The problem here is the assumption that there is something wrong with sound, biblical teaching, which is quite clear on the matter. Whether or not the biblical truth “resonates” with an individual who may openly embrace the homosexual lifestyle is not relevant. Issues of gender identity and gender roles are very clearly expressed within the pages of the bible.
For example, for those who profess to be bible-believing Christians, in the second chapter of the book of Genesis, it is written that God found that it was not good for Adam to be alone and said, “I will make a helper suitable for him.” The bible passages that follow describe how God went about creating Eve, by taking one of Adam’s ribs.
“Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”
Once they were united as partners designed by God to be and to work together, scripture then says:
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
The AP seems all too eager [while ignoring the bible altogether] to convince its readers that not only is it okay for Christians to embrace homosexuality, but that it is somehow wrong not to embrace sexual practices that scripture clearly teaches are sin.
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
In other words, if the AP finds people who identify themselves as Christians and who are openly embracing their homosexuality, then they are likely listening to false teaching, which is, apparently, encouraging people to embrace sin, rather than to repent of it, and seek forgiveness, which is what the gospel of Jesus Christ teaches, according to scripture. [Read: repentance and forgiveness]
Wesley Hill is also quoted as saying, “We are wanting to have conversations that older generations of evangelicals haven’t had or haven’t wanted to have,” By including this quote in their piece, the AP seems to imply that those who do not condone homosexuality are somehow out of step with the times.
While the bible is very clear about “loving they neighbor” and in fact, even “loving thine enemies”, nowhere in scripture is it taught that people of faith are to condone, justify, much less celebrate sexual sin.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
