It’s Wednesday night and what are your plans? If you live in SoCal and you live anywhere near the legendary Whisky a Go Go on the world famous Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA, you come out to see a show that you’re sure will not disappoint. Thanks to Aaron Rossi (drummer for Ministry, band manager, & owner of AJR Enterprises) for putting on a night of eclectic music for the masses and true music fans. The lineup included: The Black Raven Project, The Pollywog Crew, Diamonds ‘n Scratch, As You Were (headliners), and DJ Alpha Omega.
If you missed it,this is what went down at this all ages show at the legendary Whisky.
The Black Raven Project, a rock band with a sexy edge, opened the night. The band members include: Raven Black (Lead Vocals), Ryan “Muppet” Cox (Drums), JD (Guitar), and the bassist for the night was a fill in while the band looks for a permanent player. Lead vocalist Raven Black has a Janice Joplin meets Hard Rock/Metal voice. This 5 foot’ish gothic barbie explodes on stage and performs much larger than her physical stature. This was the second time I have seen this band (but the first time with great lighting and sound that The Whisky provides) and I confess I am a fan and recommend them to everyone.
The Pollywog Crew is a must see Beastie Boys tribute band and is hands down the best ever. Jumping off stage onto the floor, dancing, singing, and tearing the roof off the Whisky. If you are a Beastie Boys fan this is a show you do not want to miss. The Pollywog Crew set is a great dancing, drinking and partying set.
Diamonds N Scratch: Wow is all I can say. Visually this band is a party and when they rip out their tunes their sound matches their look. Pop/Dance/Electro is how the band defines their sound and I would agree. The band: Murv Douglas – Lead Vocals, Sondra D – Vocals/Keys, John Bruton – Bass, Alex ET – Drums/Percussion, and David Cota – DJ. If you’re a fan of LMFAO, go to a Diamonds ‘n Scratch show and you’ll be hooked. If this band doesn’t hit the big time withing the next few years it will because the big label talent scouts are asleep on the job. If you want a set that will make you shake your booty and put a smile on your face, this is your band.
As You Were is a hard rock meets small “m” Metal band that was up next and the headliners for the evening. From our perspective, seeing this band countless times has proven to be the right thing to do because they always deliver. The guys: Jeff Zazueta – Lead Vocals, Steven Snider- Lead Guitar/Vocals, Chris Anderson- Guitar/Vocals, Dave Wilson – Bass/Vocals, and AJ Horton – Drums/Vocals, put on a rocking show every time. Wednesday night at The Whisky was no different. Adding new songs to the set always helps and they threw out 1 new one to their loyal fans. The floor was full when they took the stage and the crowd sang along and danced to the bands cover of “Party Rock”. Although this band has taken off some time to write and record new music, they are still making noise playing a few select shows (they also played with Smile Empty Soul two days after headlining The Whisky). Be sure to check them out when they hit a stage near you.
The night closed as it started with DJ Alpha Omega. It was a rocking Wednesday for The Whisky.
As always, support local music and check out a show near you. If it’s a all ages show – bring a kid and help insure the future health of the live music scene.
