The plot thickens on Attorney General Eric Holder’s involvement in the search warrant of FOX News Reporter James Rosen’s emails. According to NBC News, Holder personally signed the warrant.
If true, it puts an entirely different light on the attorney general that could have long-lasting implications on his continuing career at the Department of Justice and the Obama administration.
Rosen was named a “possible co-conspirator” in violation of the long-standing Espionage Act. The charge was apparently obtained by NBC News from an unidentified Pentagon source.
Rosen has never been charged and few suspect he ever will be with the media furor spilling into the public domain. It is just the latest embarrassment in a long string of scandalous activity within the Obama administration including the Benghazi murders last September and the recently publicized IRS activities against conservative organizations.
Ironically, the story broke the very day President Obama revealed in a speech he had personally ordered the attorney general to “review the Justice Department’s standards for investigating cases that involve journalists.”
A far cry from the distance Obama has put himself from the IRS scandal.
In the speech, Obama said, “I am troubled by the possibility that leak investigations may chill the investigative journalism that holds government accountable. Journalists should not be at legal risk for doing their jobs.”
NBC News reported that “a law enforcement official” revealed Holder’s involvement in the situation Thursday.
Holder had recused himself from the AP phone records investigation that broke prior to the Rosen incident. No one had suspected at that time his deep involvement in the Rosen affair.
The breaking events involving Obama’s attorney general and close friend are reminiscent of the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell who eventually spent time at a federal prison facility for his involvement in that scandal in the early 1970’s.
