The onset of Nicki Minaj’s success as one of the only visible major female rappers in the music industry breaking barriers at this time has caused many music fans to demand more female representation and equality in Hip Hop.
Ironically, when up and coming female emcees step up to the plate, they are usually greeted with major comparisons to Minaj, which tends to overshadow the talent and lyrical ability of female rappers who want to blaze their own path.
Luckily, Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea, born Amethyst Kelly, has managed to differentiate herself from the pack. If you don’t know Iggy, it’s just a matter of time before you do.

On Saturday, Azalea performed at the women-centric “Chime for Change: The Sound of Change Live” concert, alongside music veterans Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Madonna. The following day, she interviewed stars of Brad Pitt’s upcoming film “World War Z” at the London premiere as MTV News host.
Currently a signed model to Wilhemina Models, Azalea has been linked to flourishing rapper ASAP Rocky and has established a reputation for her fierce work ethic. It is clear that Azalea is becoming a force in her own right.
Her catalog of music is definitely entertaining, and at times, highly controversial. In fact, in the very beginning of her career, Azalea faced criticism for lyrics that many critics said were degrading to women and minorities. Despite the chatter, it appears that the bad publicity has only done great things for Azalea’s career. Her latest effort “Work” is one of her most inspiring and successful songs she has created to date.
Behind the scenes of “Work”
While many would disagree, “Work” may be the new anthem for the female movement of this generation. That might be a little overboard, but the song is definitely a summer hit. In the gutsy song, the T.I. prodigy speaks about her transition from Australia to Miami, Florida at the tender age of 16, in addition to early career woes. The song, alone, is powerful and is a sure catalyst for motivating the complacent. “Work” is already receiving heavy rotation at clubs in major markets and is garnering radio play in regions that initially rejected Azalea as a legitimate rapper.

Listeners beware. In no way is Azalea the prissy, politically correct rapper that some would assume from her model-like features. Azalea is uncut and uncensored. Her style is unapologetic and she has no shame, which makes her all the more admirable as most talent are before they hit mainstream fame. While the “conventional” of the music industry are slow to catch on to Azalea’s appeal, it is just a matter of time before the world knows that Hip Hop has room for more than one rap queen.
Azalea is currently on tour and will be performing in Los Angeles at the Echoplex on June 23rd and June 24th.
