Season 1 of AXS TV’s The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands took a decidedly hard turn this week, as the show played host to the metal sounds of Damage, Inc., a tribute to the music of Metallica. Host Katie Daryl played with the theme, dazzling everyone in the live audience at the Roxy on Sunset, as well as the millions watching on TV at home with her gold, metallic skirt.
Let me premise my review with the revelation that I have never been a fan of metal music, with the exception of STRYPER, and had never before listened to any of Metallica’s music. Although I appreciate the musicality of some metal bands, I have never been a fan of having lyrics screamed at me. Much to my satisfaction, Damage, Inc.’s rendition of Metallica was not that type of metal.
Instead, I was treated to some intense musical genius by Chris Brightwell on lead guitar, Kevin Knight on bass and backing vocals, brother Chris Knight on rhythm guitar and lead vocals and Tone DeCorte on drums.
Having gotten to know the members of Damage, Inc. over the past few weeks, especially brothers Kevin and Chris, I was open to what they could accomplish on stage. They did not disappoint.
Chris’ vocals were incredible and the lyrics understandable. Brightwell’s lead guitar work was some of the finest I have seen in any band that has played this show, and brought out the best of Metallica’s music. The chemistry onstage was palpable, and, coupled with the energy put out by the overflow crowd, created an intense electricity that could easily have supplied all the lighting needed for the night.
My favorite tunes of the night were Enter Sandman, Fade to Black and Seek and Destroy, and I loved the instrumental break in the middle of Master of Puppets. Other songs in the set included Wherever I May Roam, Fuel, One, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Creeping Death.
One of my favorite moments was looking out over the crowd and seeing a little girl of about six, sitting on her daddy’s shoulders and headbanging with the best of them. It totally solidified my belief that Damage, Inc. was a force to be reckoned with. They were champions at whipping up the crowd to the verge of a frenzy, and then cooling them down, only to do it all over again on the next song.
With Memorial Day coming up next Monday, AXS TV The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands will take the week off and return on June 3 with Hollywood U2, a tribute to, who else but Bono and U2. Join us at the Roxy on Sunset when doors open at 7 p.m. The show is telecast live to the east coast at 8 p.m. FREE tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com.
