The Appalachian mountains offer endless opportunities for those who love camping. A weekend getaway or other family outing has been shown to build camaraderie. However, a backcountry camping adventure should be reserved for the more experienced campers.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires all backcountry campers to register in the event they need help or need to be reached otherwise. The Backcountry Information Office is open 8-5 daily and can be contacted at (865) 436-1297. You can download a park trail map to find the location of trails, backcountry shelters, and campsites in the park.
