It’s a mystery why Bäddat För Trubbel hasn’t received more attention. Maybe it’s the fact that the band’s initial releases were pressed overseas and scant copies made it across the Atlantic. Maybe it’s the fact that the band sings in Swedish and a whole lot of dopey Americans can’t seem to deal with being unable to readily understand lyrics. But if you hold the belief that punk rock is a matter of emotion and feeling rather than words and ideas, then this band is for you.
None of the various Bloodstains Across Sweden compilations that were released more than a decade ago featured lyric sheets, leaving listeners to scratch their head as to the meaning of some songs. Still, the raw power of the raging rock ‘n’ roll dished out by classic Swedish ’70s punk bands like Kriminella Gitarrer, Liket Lever and Dr. Zeke was inescapable. That same raw power is on full display in Bäddat För Trubbel’s stripped down, direct, utterly confident and accomplished music.
Well, there are no more excuses to avoid listening to this truly mind-bending act, thanks to 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, which has released a Stateside pressing of the band’s long-player, “Det Här Är Inte New York,” (“This Isn’t New York”). The record also generously includes Bäddat För Trubbel’s “ISO 9004” EP and a download code for folks who care about that sort of thing.
There’s also a lyric sheet, so you can follow along and actually discover what the songs are about. Surprise: The songs are about untrue bitches, lame club bouncers, contempt for poseurs, heartbreak and the emptiness of modern urban life. But Bäddat För Trubbel takes this familiar territory and imbues it with a ferocity and a from-the-gut feeling that makes this record one of the best things I’ve listened to in quite a while. Highly recommended.
