The compilers of “The Beatles And Me” book announced July 30 they’d received a previously unseen picture of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, believed to have been taken during the recording of “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” The picture shows them adding backing vocals and sharing the same microphone. An unknown pair of female feet (possibly Yoko’s) is in the foreground.
They also announced a piece of the stage from the Birkenhead YMCA, Merseyside where Ringo Starr made his debut with the Beatles can be won in a competition within the pages of “The Beatles And Me.” The winning entries will be drawn from a guitar case on Sept. 8, 51 years after the appearance by John, Paul, George and Ringo.
In addition, Liverpool Cavern DJ Billy Butler will also host an interview with author Johnson along with contributors to the book on his Wednesday afternoon show on BBC Radio Merseyside. Butler introduced the Beatles at the Cavern and has his own story in the book of the day he posed as John Lennon at a window.
JULIAN DONATES SIGNED BOOK: Julian Lennon announced July 30 his White Feather Foundation will start a new auction beginning Aug. 2 to raise funds for those in need of clean water and sanitation. The prize will be a signed copy of his book, “Beatles Memorabilia – The Julian Lennon Collection.”
“This year, we are raising money to help people who are dying from lack of clean water and sanitation,” an email to followers read. “This natural resource that is essential for life is in appallingly short supply. Nearly 5,000 people, mainly children, die each day from preventable water-born diseases. Almost 1.2 billion people lack clean water, and this is increasing. We already have projects amounting to almost €700,000 ($928,113) helping thousands and thousands of people, for which we need your help.
“It’s a small charity, with a big heart and we try to select the right causes for the right reasons. It doesn’t matter which project needs help, where they come from or what they’ve had in the past. It’s about helping make one more thing right.”
Bidding begins at 4 p.m. GMT (Noon ET/9 a.m. PT).
BEATLES ENGINEER’S LATEST PROJECT: Ken Scott, who worked with the Beatles on albums including “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Rubber Soul,” “Magical Mystery Tour” and the White Album, was announced last week as the producer for the forthcoming album by Hellion, a Los Angeles-based metal band.
