Xiao Liwu (Little Gift) is growing up. The young panda celebrated his first birthday (albeit a bit late) at the San Diego Zoo yesterday with a 200lb, 3-tiered cake of ice decorated with his name and the number 1 spelled out in mashed carrots.
Although the 41-lb cub “definitely has a sweet tooth,” according to keepers, he is still nursing and not ready for solid food yet. That, however, did not stop well-wishers from presenting him with gifts of alfalfa and hay wrapped up in animal-shaped boxes, which he shared with his proud mom Bai Yun.
Visitors can come see the pair every day including holidays (now through Sept. 2) from 9am-9pm at the San Diego Zoo located at 2920 Zoo Dr. in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, CA. For more information call 619 231-1515.
In the meantime, Zoo Atlanta reports that its brand new panda cubs, born July 15th (see
