For the Big O, I put together an army of writers to cover all of the bouts for DNN. Due to circumstances beyond DNN’s control, they were unable to publish all the recaps. So, I am publishing them here. None of the articles were written by me. I’m just an editor for them. Katarina Van Rotten wrote this recap. Rotten skates for the Flat Track Furies. This is her second year covering the Big O. She has a natural talent for covering roller derby.
EUGENE, OR – On Saturday at the Big O, the Sick Town Derby Dames (#135 in WFTDA) managed to keep this one close until ten minutes into the second half. Relentless defense from Humboldt Roller Derby (#65) kept Sick Town’s jammer trapped in the pack for a full two minutes, taking the wind out of the lower-ranked team’s sails, and giving Humboldt the oomph they needed to skate to victory 193-135.
The first ten minutes of the bout were characterized by tight, heavy-hitting defense from both teams. There were four lead changes, and neither team was able to pull ahead by more than a handful of points. With about twelve minutes left to go in the first half, a monstrous sternum hit by Humboldt’s Villain Thomas sent Sick Town jammer Arctic Wolfsbane crashing to the floor and allowed Humboldt to take their first multi-digit lead of the game 57-41.
Near the end of the first half, standout Sick Town jammer ILL-NINJA took advantage of a power jam to bring her team back within one point, 72-71. In the subsequent jam, Villain Thomas brutalized Sick Town’s jammer Stitches N Bones while Humboldt jammer Ole Chole racked up four natural grand slams to end the half with Humboldt in the lead 92-73.
Both teams started the second half strong, and Sick Town began to chip away at Humboldt’s lead. However, six jams in, Sick Town jammer Bloodstain spent a punishing two minutes stuck in the pack, and Humboldt’s Gun Slingin Glory put up fourteen unanswered points to make the score 109-81. About midway through the second half, Sick Town narrowed the margin to twenty points, but Humboldt never looked back and ultimately took the win 193-135.
This was the final game at the Big O for Humboldt, who finished their weekend with two wins and one loss – including a two-point win over Treasure Valley (#85) and a three-point loss to Sin City (#45). Their next sanctioned bout is against Silicon Valley in September. Sick Town dropped all three of their bouts on the weekend, including a relatively narrow twelve-point loss to the higher-ranked Slaughter County (#83) and a blowout to Treasure Valley. Sick Town next plays Lilac City in July.
