Billy Joel and Elton John first hit the road together in 1995. Over the years, they toured together seven times but in 2011, a feud between Billy Joel and Elton John began that was to last for two years; until the 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City, reported US Weekly on June 15, 2013.
“Elton John and Billy Joel have decided to bury the hatchet. On Thursday, June 13, the two music icons — who have toured together seven times over the years — made peace at the 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City, publicly ending their two-year feud.”
No man likes to be told what to do by another man – especially when it comes to alcohol — and Billy Joel is no different.
When Billy Joel had to listen to some “tough love” speech by his former tour mate, then 64-year-old Elton John, things didn’t go too well for the relationship between Billy Joel, who was born on May 9, 1949, and Elton John, who was born on March 25, 1947.
In 2011, Billy Joel being the subject of a John Elton interview with Rolling Stone magazine during which Elton John pointed out that Billy Joel wasn’t getting the kind of help that he needed for his alcoholism began a feud between Billy Joel and the two-year-old older John Elton that continued with more “small jabs” thrown at each other during subsequent interviews.
“Billy’s a conundrum,” said Elton John about Billy Joel to Rolling Stone magazine in the interview which began the feud between the two men. “We’ve had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism … He’s going to hate me for this, but every time he’s gone to rehab, they’ve been rehab light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors. He goes to rehab where they have TVs.”
Billy Joel, of course, wasn’t going to take Elton John’s comments about him lightly and in subsequent interviews spoke in unfavorable ways about Elton John’s private life.
Speaking for himself, Elton John rebutted Billy Joel’s comments by standing up for himself. “He doesn’t know anything about my private life … He’s a very friendly, charming man, a nice fun guy, but we really never spent much time personally together.”
After two years, Billy Joel and Elton John have taken a “manly” step forward and publicly ended their feud during Thursday’s 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame at the New York’s Marriott Marquis.
While onstage and accepting the Johnny Mercer Award, Elton John reached out to Billy Joel. “Mr. Joel, I haven’t seen you tonight, but I love you dearly.”
When Billy Joel took the stage later on during the ceremony, he gave Elton John his response. “Is Elton still here, by the way? We’re OK. Call me. It’s the same phone number.”
