Billy Joel has been suffering depression for a long time but the singer is finally speaking up as to why he has been down in the proverbial dumps. In a May 24 report by The New York Times via the UK’s Daily Mail, the piano man talked about what happened to him and why he suffered an image problem that has come back to haunt him.
According to the article in the Daily Mail, Billy Joel has become known for more than his masterful music in the past decade or so. In fact, this public figure has become known for his various stints in rehab and his involvement in more than one car crash.
With that in mind, what was it that caused these negative effects regarding this huge and highly regarded talent?
History shows that the legendary musician started hitting the bottle and suffered consequences because of that. However, drinking was a bad solution for Billy Joel who claims that depression was the route of his downfall. He explains that he “used booze as medication” rather than, say, taking prescribed pharmaceuticals of some sort.
So why did Joel sink so low?
The madness all started when 9/11 happened. Apparently, this horrible act of violence made Billy move into what he refers to as a “mental fog.” He told the New York Times that his “mind wasn’t right” and that he simply sunk into a “deep, deep depression” after the terrorism attacks ravaged New York City.
At that point, and then later when he went through what he considered to be an extremely bad break-up, Joel looked to Dewars White Label Scotch for courage. Later, he reportedly moved on to vodka and was behind the wheel during a couple of car accidents because of his drinking.
Still, Billy Joel’s depression is what the talent believes led to his fondness for an excess of alcohol. Although this proud New Yorker never was sent there, and he never actually earned a DUI for his recklessness, he did go to rehab.
However, once there, this widely known entertainer discovered that 12-step programs were not for him, and so he decided to go another route by cutting out binge drinking from his repertoire. Today, Billy admits he still imbibes in the fruit of the grapes. As Joel put it, “…I don’t hide it. I have a glass of wine of with a meal.”
And so, with that frankness about not only his downfall starting more than a decade ago but also about what is happening to him now, Billy Joel has explained his depression. He has explained what happened to him to trigger that dark place and he has explained how he has rebounded after suffering a personal struggle upon realizing the impact of the horror that happened on that fateful September day nearly 12 years ago.
With that said and that explored, hopefully life is now on the rise for Billy Joel, a great talent and a national treasure to boot.
