1. Black industries that are thriving. There are a few industries that are black dominant that are either staying strong or growing despite the struggling economy.
Authorship : There are many black authors that seem to be doing well. There seems to be a particular strength among black female authors and a growing group of black authors who are self publishing. Black books/authors | Lulu.com | black author – blogtalkradio | Black author Chicago meet ups
Fitness/Bodybuilding : Throughout sites like youtube. There’s a growing admiration and following of fitness Gurus. Many of which are black. Twinmuscleworkout, PhysiquesofGreatness, Barstarzz, Bootynomics, HannibalforKing and many others. Search them on Youtube. ;-D
Restaurants : There are quite a few restaurants throughout Chicago-land that are not only black owned but feature cuisine with a West Indian or African flare to them. Soulfood vs Slavefood series :-)
Hair care : No matter what the economy is doing. 1. People need to take care of their hair and 2. Black people have always had a unique culture that surrounds our hair. Cutting it, weaving, plating, coloring etc. We even have three movies that were filmed right here in Chicago surrounding the black hair culture.
Car washing, detailing, accessorizing : It’s interesting that despite what is going on with beaurocracy and higher gas prices. Many melanin dominant men and women seem to always be able to paint, clean and eaccesorize their nice rides.
Afrocentric fashion and jewelry : Black folks always seem to have our special love for being shiny. Even when everywhere else is filled with gloom. Dojore Jewelry

Note : The people in these industries probably won’t be able to hire you or find you employment but they definitely can help along in the right direction. Especially if they’re doing something you love. Try and reach out to them.
2. Generating the new Economy : The old economy is dying. What is the old economy? The old economy is employers, employees, resumes, huge corporations, job filings, mailing/emailing reumes, searching classifieds, obeying rules, following protocol, scowering craigslist all of which are tiring, expensive and unrewarding. The old paradigm of Employer, employee and customer or Pimp, whore and john(the same) is dying. We need a new paradigm of happiness, freedom, decentralization and copoeration. here are som steps that I think will take Black Chicagoans and black folks nationwide into a completely new economic paradigm.
A. Figure out what you’re good at and what you like : People need to gravitate to what they love. But also be conscious of what they’re good at. Many of us black people are quite talented in something that is outside stereotypes. We’re good at things that someone wouldn’t mind paying for. But we don’t cultivate that talent and make money with it. That can change. The old adage “Follow your passion” comes to mind. :-D
B. Befriend the web : Definitely focus your energy on the web. Slowly pull away from the brick and morter of the 3-D world. So many online industries look happier, more lucrative and freer than the old paradigm of being in a physical building with a boss.
C. Share with the world : There’s some ways to advertise what you’re doing. 1. Produce your good or service that you care about and put the first few portions of it out there for free. Then start selling it once you get a bit of a customer base. Or L.A.M.(Liberated Alpha Marketing) 2. Another way of sharing with the world is ALWAYS put out a portion of your good or service for free. As in a small portion of what you’re creating or doing is constantly given out free to the public while you charge for the greater portion of what you’re providing. L.F.M.(Liberated Fractional Marketing) 3. Another method (than I’m working on) is going out, finding people(preferably people you’ve never met) giving them the good or service for free, drafting a contract with them to review what you’re doing and they allow you to use that review as advertising for their non-job.
D. Accept from others : Be ready spiritually, emotionally, psychologically to be able to accept a “yes” from others. Get rid of guilt and fear. Many of us feel guilty accepting some one elses money because we believe we’ve joined the dark side. We see John Corzine or Wall Street corruption and we become afraid that our souls will get corrupted just like theirs. Not true. If you look logically at your self and evaluate how you treat people. You’ll realize that you’re not like that and you won’t become that way as long as you stay honest. Remove the emotion and really see that you don’t change after getting a bit of money. Those guys were already that way before they became wealthy and the power made them worse. Don’t get hyper wealthy or hyper powerful. Shoot for the goal of happiness. You’re never gonna be like them. Don’t worry.
E. Connect efficiently : Too many people use social networking wrongly. Many of us use the web to connect with people that we could and should meet face to face. And we try to establish relationships with people who are not local. Switch that around and we might start seeing success.
Campaign non job I borrowed much of his advice and I’m doing my best to apply these principles now.
Note : These and many other strategies will definitely help us create a new economy instead of struggling to find employment in the old one. Let the dinosaur economy fall by the way side while we create a new one for ourselves.
