Country singer/wise-cracker Blake Shelton isn’t one to keep secrets, and that includes not hiding his love for his home state of Oklahoma. (In fact, he met wife Miranda Lambert during a TV concert special in which the two took on a version of the David Frizzell/Shelly West No. 1 hit country classic “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.”)
“Everyone has their way to help, and mine as an entertainer is to perform to help raise money and awareness for this tragedy.”
But that’s not all the “Boys ‘Round Here” singer has brewing up his sleeve. Shelton announced via Tuesday’s The Voice that select participating Starbucks locations will give a free/discounted tall (i.e., small) cup of coffee today to anyone giving a donation in any amount to the United Way of Central Oklahoma. There’s no guarantee of participation, however it is supposed to be any retail location around the country (locations in Target, Kroger, etc. are excluded). What is a guarantee, though, is that the charmingly witty Warner Brothers Nashville recording artist, 2012 ACM Awards show co-host and current The Voice coach has reached out along with a few other fellow artists to help his home with the live concert event Healing in the Heartland, airing tonight (5/29) at 9/8 central on NBC. According to TV Guide, the special is also scheduled for more accolades with a re-air on BRAVO at 11:30/10:30 PM central. It will also air at some point on cable networks Style, G4, E! and CMT on either a live or delayed basis. Shelton’s set to be surrounded by some of his closest friends (and lovers) including Luke Bryan, Rascal Flatts, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Usher, Miranda Lambert, and Darius Rucker. Tickets sold out within half an hour. The show is live from Oklahoma City but don’t fret, local fans: Blake closes out Nashville’s LP Field Friday night, June 7th at CMA Music Festival.
Oh, and Toby Keith is planning a benefit too. Word is it will feature Ronnie Dunn and some new guy named Garth Brooks.
You may also be in luck if you’d like to try your hand at bidding your way in to see Blake – he’s among the multitude of music-makers donating some special items to a local radio-station sponsored auction (also benefiting victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes, see a complete list here) ending on May 30th and 31st, respectively. His contribution includes 2 tickets, 2 meet & greet passes, plus hotel & airfare to any show on his surely appropriately named Ten Times Crazier tour. The devilish dose of crazy kicks off on July 19th and runs through October 5th.
You can also help support the cause by going to www.facebook.com/unitedway and donating whatever you can. Or/also bid on items from Blake, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts and more in the official Healing in the Heartland auction. All proceeds benefit the United Way of Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund. Bid now: www.ebay.com/healingintheheartland. Of course a contribution isn’t mandatory, but in the hit words of Shelton: it would “Sure Be Cool If You Did.”
Blake Shelton’s current album Based on a True Story…, $11.88 on Amazon is a Top 5 album and even hit #1 on the US Country Albums chart.
