Bluegrass at the Fair was held at the Colorado State Fair, on May 31 through June 2. It was formerly held at the Nature & Raptor Center of Pueblo. Grass It Up, Blue Canyon Boys and Party of Peasants kicked off the event, on May 31. 18 more bands occupied the two stages, WeatherPORT and Pickin’ Parlor, on June 1.
Eric Grace played the mandolin, Marte Meyer played the banjo, Doug Elrick played the guitar, Joel Denman played the fiddle, Kenny Pabst played the bass and they are Kantankerous. All band members provided vocals.
Kantankerous began their set with “Road to Columbus” and the audience provided percussion, as they clapped their hands with the instrumental. After the recital, Grace mentioned it had been awhile since they played a show in Pueblo.
“Cold Wind” was the last of Kantankerous’ performance. Grace showcased his abilities on the mandolin, as he hit the high notes and brought back the capabilities of the mandolin. The spectators applauded his efforts, after finishing his solo.
“Old Log Cabin”, “I’m My Own Grandpa”, “J’s Tune”, “Lonesome Without You”, “Blue Diamond Mine” and “Daybreak In Dixie” were also part of Kantankerous’ set.
Tony Peduto played the mandolin and guitar, Rob Tobiasen played the guitar, Jonny Slumpf played the banjo, Emily Wilson played the fiddle and mandolin, Corinne Nelson played the bass and they are Out of Nowhere. Peduto, Nelson and Tobiasen provided vocals.
“Columbus Stockade Blues” kick-started Out of Nowhere’s concert, as Wilson provided a fiddle instrumental to begin their concert. After the song came to end, they were welcomed with cheers and whistles.
Out of Nowhere ended their gig with an all instrumental tune, “Bill Cheatham”. Peduto asked if they looked like they were having fun and hoped it showed. Then, they asked the audience to stay tuned for Grass It Up.
“Clinch Mountain Backstep”, “Coal Tattoo”, “I’ve Endured”, “Gone At Last”, “Lonesome Fiddle Blues”, “Poor Boy’s Delight”, “East Virginia Blues”, “Some Roads” and were also part of Out of Nowhere’s set.
Other bluegrass bands who took the stages on June 1 included: Party of Peasants, Grass Hat Gals, Frost Family Clan, Hot Plate Rendition, Play It Again Stan, Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Fireweed, Blue Pepper Trio, Steel Pennies, Blue Pepper Trio and Rifters. Out of Nowhere, Jeff Scroggins & Colorado and Steel Pennies performed twice. The Rifters performed at the dance, following the first day’s festivities.
