On May 28, 2013, the remains of a newborn baby girl were found at a Portland, Oregon recycling plant, according to The Oregonian.
The publication writes, “The African-American or mixed-race baby was near term, weighed five-and-a-quarter pounds and was alive and breathing at birth,” according to the state medical examiner’s office.
The forensic pathologist for the medical examiner’s office, Dr. Larry Lewman, told the Oregonian there was no obvious trauma to the baby’s body.
The child’s umbilical cord was cut or torn, but mainly intact, Lewman said.
He added, “Maybe somebody noticed someone pregnant one minute and not the next.”
An employee with EFI Recycling in North Portland found the child at about 8:30 a.m. and called police.
Scott Jenkins, the president and chief executive officer of the recycling company said, “We are saddened by these events and trust the police will find and punish those responsible,” according to the Oregonian.
Homicide detectives are now investigating the case.
