In their first home match of the season against PDL opposition, the Baltimore Bohemians secured a 1-0 victory over the Central Jersey Spartans, thanks to a first half goal from Michael Gamble.
The hosts signaled their offensive intentions early, as Hugh Roberts barely missed heading home a ball from a Mamadou Kansaye corner four minutes into the match. Geaton Caltabiano’s blast three minutes later sailed wide right of Spartan keeper Stephen Graziani.
After putting five attempts towards goal in the next twenty minutes, the Bohemians finally got their breakthrough in the 35th minute. Michael Gamble found himself in space on the left wing, dashing 30 yards downfield with the ball. After closing to within six yards of the net, Gamble unleashed a drive that curled inside the near post, giving Baltimore a 1-0 advantage. The Bohemians have struck first in all three of their PDL matches so far this season.
The only quality opportunity for the visitors came with seven minutes to go before the break, as Rafael Braga whipped in a corner, finding the head of Matthew Whitaker, who could only direct his shot high over the crossbar.
Baltimore nearly doubled their lead two minutes after the restart, as Caltabiano’s drive from just outside the box caromed back off the crossbar. Gamble couldn’t cash in on a second goal, either, as both of his attempts on net minutes later were held on to by Graziani.
The Bohemians continued to put on the offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the second half, while putting a stranglehold on the Spartans’ scoring chances. After allowing just three shots in the first 45 minutes, the Baltimore defense gave up only four more in the second half.
Central Jersey’s frustrations came to the front late in the contest, as Dennis Correia picked up a yellow card with seven minutes to go. Rafael Braga was then shown a straight red card in the 90th minute, hauling down Pete Caringi as he led a three-on-one break towards the net.
With the victory, Baltimore (2-0-1) now sits in a second-place tie in the Mid-Atlantic Division, alongside Jersey Express, with seven points each. The Bohs travel to Brooklyn for their next match against F.A. Euro on June 5th.
