Forecast discussion: Here in Boston, we are seeing a pattern with our weather for the last few days. The day starts off with low clouds and fog, before sunshine burns the fog and clouds by the late morning. However, southwest winds help to bring in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, keeping muggy conditions. Finally, during the overnight hours, we are seeing isolated showers develop. This weather pattern will remain the same for another few days.
At this time, a cold front is moving into the Mid-Atlantic region. This front is creating some showers and thunderstorms for western Massachusetts. This activity may move over the area tonight, before drier air ends the precipitation early Monday morning. We will see some sunshine during the day, but the sun may actually help create more showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. We will see the same pattern for Tuesday, before the weather pattern begins to change, especially in the upper levels.
An upper level ridge to our east will actually retrograde, or move westward. This will push an upper level low centered over the Ohio River Valley into the Central Plains. The result of this ridge means temperatures will slowly increase as we move into the holiday weekend, with the chance of seeing precipitation decreasing.
However, with the Bermuda High continuing to control our winds, moisture coming from the Gulf of Mexico will continue to remain in the atmosphere. So, we will be seeing heat indexes in the lower to middle 90’s throughout the weekend. Take the proper precautions, especially if you have to work outside during the summer. Take frequent breaks, as well as drink plenty of fluids. Also, make sure you are wearing proper sunscreen, as safe sun times are only about 15-20 minutes on very sunny days.
