Forecast discussion: Boston was protected by a high pressure system over the eastern Great Lakes, and northeast winds helped temperatures and dewpoint temperatures stay much cooler than the last couple of weeks. However, it was really the low clouds which helped keep temperatures in the upper 70’s. The clouds were due to a low pressure system off of the Jersey Shore brought showers and periods of rain to the DelMarva Peninsula. Over the next few days, we will return to the hot, humid weather we have seen earlier this month.
As we move into this evening, eastern Massachusetts may see a few isolated showers this evening and into parts of Saturday morning. However, as we move through the afternoon, the low pressure system will begin to dissolve, and the high pressure system near Bermuda will once again take over our weather.
We will see mostly sunny skies by Sunday, but the high will also shift our winds back to the southwest. This will help bring back tropical moisture from the Southern U.S., helping to increase the dewpoint temperature. This means the air will become oppressive and feel heavy again. Also, temperatures will increase back to the upper 80’s by Sunday, with a return to possible 90 degree weather for Monday.
Looking at the computer models, the temperatures will remain in the lower 90’s right into the weekend. So, we may see another four or possibly five day heat wave in Rhode Island. As we move into the middle of the week, we will begin to see an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms. At this time, it appears the best chance for showers and thunderstorms will be either Thursday or Friday, as a cold front moves into the Great Lakes by the morning hours. At this time, the computer models are all disagreeing on the speed of the front. The United Kingdom model pushes the front through on Thursday, with the European and American models agreeing on Friday. After looking over the previous model runs, I believe the best chance for any showers and thunderstorms would be Friday, as the American and European models were more consistent seeing cooler air move past the Canadian border and into Northern New England early Friday morning.
